Today’s featured blogger is Colette from Jamerican Spice! I first ran across her blog after she had so consistently posted on mine. Her comments are always so sweet and thoughtful. If you haven’t seen her vlogs (Monday Mingle) yet, do check them out. She has the cutest accent ever! I hope you will take a moment to visit Colette!
What is the name of your blog and how did you choose this name for your blog?
My blog’s name is JamericanSpice.
It is a combination of cultures. I am from the Caribbean island of Jamaica but now reside here in America and so there’s a joining of families from different cultures, hence the title ‘ Jamerican (Jamaican-American).’ Now the ‘Spice’ is pretty much me. I’m a little bit of everything and very few people get close enough to really know me beyond the politeness. So the ticker put it all together in one word: JamericanSpice
How long have you had your blog?
I started my blog in July 2008, but wasn’t using it at all because I had no clue what a blog really was, and then I started browsing around by invite from a friend to come visit her blog. Then I found other blogs and the idea to blog started to take root. One of the first blogs that I visited regularly was/is: Coffee With The Mrs. That’s also where I started entering giveaways and getting pointed to other blogs by her links.
I started blogging in earnest just a few months now. There’s so much to learn.
What made you start a blog?
My blog is my little corner on the web to share about my family and our travels and share with my extended family without writing so many emails or having to deal with adding photos to photo sharing sites without the way to express where they were taken and what is going on etc, or just the pain of uploading them to email to send. I at first thought I would use my blog as a journal to talk about certain things in my life that need to get out and might help me heal – I’m still weighing if I should do this or just get a pen and journal.
I’ve met so many wonderful people through blogging and it’s great. Recently I’ve been trying to get into doing reviews and giveaways as I love entering and want to offer this to my readers and friends too. However I don’t want it to be a full time job, I just want to do it for things that my family uses and that I can be honest about sharing my thoughts on.
Tell us a little about yourself – do you have kids? grand kids? pets?
I want to think that I’m young mother, but gosh I’m in my late 20s with two children. A boy who is four and will go to Kindergarten next year. A little girl who is two going on six who thinks she is the boss of her brother, but then he too does the same. They are like two hands – they clap together.
I would love to have four more children. My heart is set on adopting two, but I feel it’s not hurrying up fast enough. I want whomever I adopt to grow up with my children so that they have a certain bond. I desire to do this so bad because I remember when I was in the girls home (orphanage), how desperately I wanted a family…someone, anyone to love me. Since a child I’ve had this desire to adopt when I was an adult and could. I don’t yet have grands
but I hope to live long enough to experience this joy.
We are still discussing if we should have pets. I’m a dog person, the husband is a cat person and so we are waiting for the kids to decide
What are some of your favorite blogs?
There was a time I could rattle off five blogs, but now my list is just too long and I worry I don’t get to keep up enough with them
What do you think makes a good blog? Why?
There are so many elements that make a good blog. People want to have connections and relationships, so when they find a blogger that they interact with on a level that provides this and it’s genuine, it brings growth and become a bond and it’s great.
What is a complaint you have about some blogs?
Lately I’ve been seeing so much high school drama going on with grown women/mothers who should be examples and it’s in such poor taste. Not to mention the ones who are news runners and keep stoking the fire of the fight instead of just letting the persons with the disagreements work it out.
Music that comes on automatically on blogs scare the latin outta me as usually my speakers are way up from listening to my own tunes.
Blogs with too many ads and pop ups that makes it crowded and takes forever to load!
What is your favorite Meme?
I honestly don’t have a favorite one. I do memes because it’s fun and great to meet other bloggers that I might not meet in my regular circle. There are some really fun memes in the blog community and I don’t think I know even half of them as yet!
How many Memes do you participate in weekly?
I think I participate in two or three memes a week. Sometimes just one! I like space and I write on my own pace and don’t necessarily follow the need to rush post.
What is the best prize you have ever won in a giveaway?
The best prize I’ve won from a giveaway is a lamp! It’s beautiful. It wasn’t on a blog though, so I hope that counts.
What is the best/favorite post you have ever written?
I think it would be Perfected in mama’s kitchen because I was talking about something that involved my son growing and learning and with me there coaching so that he can enjoy this area of fun even better. It’s a wonderful memory despite the little thorns and obstacles at that time. Now I’m about to do this for the little one.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Since you asked I’ll fill in that I don’t know my father, I’ve never met him, and even though he walked away from my mother when she was pregnant and vulnerable, I still would like to meet him, because I still pray that he is well and after all is said and done, he is my father. I don’t expect anything, it would just be nice for me to see his face and hear his voice and decipher his heart.
Thanks for featuring me. I’m tickled with excitement!
