Although I had heard of eating chia seeds before, like most people my first thought when hearing the word “chia” is “CH-CH-CH-CHIA!” Yeah, you know what I’m talking about–the pottery that grows! When I was offered the opportunity to try Mamma Chia beverages, I thought, why not! I put flax seeds on my oatmeal, so why not drink chia seeds? Why not, right?
My assumption was that the chia seeds would be ground into the drink. But when I saw that Mamma Chia has actual whole chia seeds floating around in the bottle–well, that looked just a little too weird to me. Do you chew this drink? Am I going to choke on the seeds? What in tarnation is going on here?!
Being the consummate professional that I am, I purchased a bottle of Raspberry Passion Mamma Chia and resolved to take at least a sip–I had to at least try it! I imagined that the seeds would be sharp and poke-y, but instead, they were soft and jelly-like. Drinking Mamma Chia is like drinking a slightly-softer (and much healthier) version of Jell-O. I expected that, at best, this would be a drink that tasted decent and packed a lot of nutritional punch. But much to my surprise, this drink is really tasty and it also packs that aforementioned nutritional punch–I mean, what more could you ask for?
Just because I can’t emphasize it enough, this is something that I will continue to buy in the future. It is just that good. Mamma Chia beverages combine organic chia seeds with organic fruit juices and are sweetened with agave nectar, so the taste is not too sweet and the fruit flavors are real and not cloying. And not only does it taste good, but it’s kind of fun too. You can bring it to the gym and everyone will ooh and ahh and think you’re the hippest, healthiest mamma on the block. Oh, and there’s the nutritional benefits too. Each bottle of Mamma Chia…
…contains 2000mg of Omega-3
…is an excellent source of fiber
…is high in antioxidants
…contains 4g of complete protein (awesome for my fellow vegetarians!)
…contains 95mg of calcium
…is lightly sweetened
…is gluten-free and vegan
Another thing I love about Mamma Chia is that it’s a Certified B Corporation and donates a percentage of its gross sales to community farming, social justice programs, and other worthy causes.
