OfferUp Mobile Marketplace

Years ago I was a seller on eBay, but slowly stopped as it became too much of a hassle (and fees!).  I then moved to Craigslist but after hearing about all of the scams, I am hesitant to use it.  What options do I have now for buying and selling my things?  Well, a very clever new iPhone app has arrived and I am pretty darned excited about it.

OfferUp is a mobile marketplace where you can buy or sell gently used items right from your iPhone!  It allows users to take a picture of the item they want to sell, post it and wait for the offers to come in!  If you are a buyer, it is easy to browse the app to find exactly what you are looking for, right in your own neighborhood!  I love the convenience of being able to shop right from my phone, and I can also get alerts so I don’t miss a deal, new listing or offer. To sell items, you do need an iPhone, but anyone can shop on the website.

Sellers also have the option to easily share the listing on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or send an email to individuals or groups. This is handy and helpful, as your local friends and acquaintances can see what you post immediately (and hopefully buy!).

I think this OfferUp is going to be huge!  There are so many things to love, but one of my favorite features is the TruYou member program where identities can be confirmed before entering a transaction with someone:

TruYou lets both buyers and sellers provide information that validates their identities. OfferUp’s buyers and sellers can earn their TruYou member status by providing additional information including a simple scan of their driver’s license, enabling each person’s identity to be cross referenced with public records. OfferUp also offers in-app private messaging to keep identities completely anonymous until buyers and sellers decide to share private information. This allows people to respond to each other without ever disclosing their email address which could easily be used to find someone’s identity via a Google or Facebook search.

OfferUp was started in the Seattle area, and currently most of the items for sale are in that area.  As more people start to list their items in other states, however, I think this is going to be the new way to buy and sell gently used items. I am absolutely in love with this app and cannot wait to list items and find things to buy (especially for our new house!).
