With the holidays right around the corner, I am excited for the food! We usually go to my dad’s house to eat and he does a lot of the cooking. I am hoping that this year I can possibly go over and help, maybe even make a new dish or two. With the “Dadgum That’s Good, Too” cookbook by John McLemore, there are plenty of recipe ideas for me to try.
I like how this cookbook is broken down into sections based on how you fix it, like smoked, fried, or grilled. The book starts with a foreword by Paula Deen. I love my southern food so this book was right up my alley. The one recipe that stuck out to me as I flipped through was the Garlic and Herb Deep-Fried Turkey. Seriously, garlic and deep fried…how could that get any better? The introduction to this particular recipe talks about his favorite turkey recipe from his first cookbook and also that he uses a Masterbuilt’s Butterball Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer. All you need for this recipe is 1 turkey (10-14lbs), 2 gallons cooking oil, preferably peanut oil, 1 (16oz) bottle Butterball Garlic and Herb Turkey Marinade (or your favorite brand) and Butterball Garlic and Herb Turkey Seasoning (or your favorite brand). In the instructions it tells you how to properly thaw the turkey and how to prepare it for deep frying. After injecting the turkey with the marinade you sprinkle it with the seasoning inside and out. The last step is how to deep fry the turkey and at what temperature the turkey will be done. I hope I can talk my dad into getting a turkey deep fryer so we can have this recipe for our Thanksgiving dinner this year. I’ve never had deep fried turkey and I think this year would be a good year to start.
I really wish I had a smoker to try a lot of the smoked recipes because between looking at the color pictures and reading the recipes, my stomach growls and it wants just about all of them.
Each recipe in “Dadgum That’s Good, Too” has wonderful color photos. They make your mouth water just looking at them. There are even some grilled dessert recipes I can’t wait to try these too. You can get “Dadgum That’s Good, Too” at Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com for $24.95.
