Walmart Family Mobile – Unlimited Plans, no contracts, no worries!

We are a family who depends on smartphones, and to say that our mobile phone bill is high would be an understatement. Lately we have been considering switching to a different plan, as it seems silly and inefficient to spend as much as we do just for phones. Our daughter is 17 and we all know how much young people depend on their phones (in addition to texting, she keeps track of school work, deadlines, etc.), but I do as well. As a blogger, I rely on my smartphone to basically run my life.  From keeping track of appointments, blog post dates, and family events to helpful everyday apps, I would be lost without my smartphone.  The same is true of my husband and his phone.

My husband and I always cringe when we open our cell phone bill. Of course we are locked into a contract, which is not easy or cheap to get out of, so we have stuck with our current plan thus far.  Perhaps now is the time to look around for a cheap wireless plan with no contract.  Ahhh, that sounds dreamy!

I recently learned about a smartphone service/plan that is really exciting – my family can have smartphones and we DO NOT need a contract! Walmart Family Mobile would allow us to buy smartphones and pay the bill monthly. I think this is a fantastic idea, and one that is sure to save the average family money each month.

With the money we could save on our mobile phones each month with Walmart Family Mobile, we would be able to do so many other things. Fun things – like take a vacation, head out for a few day trips, go to the movies, or a number of other activities.  One place we have been itching to go to is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  I would MUCH rather spend money doing fun things that make memories to last a lifetime, instead of paying a ridiculous amount for phone service!

I headed out yesterday to check out the Walmart Family Mobile plan options and to also see what phones were available on this plan. I have to admit that my husband and I are pretty loyal to our iPhones, so I was pleased to see that the iPhone is an option. When you choose to take advantage of Walmart Family Mobile, you can either buy one of the available phones under the plan, or you also have the option of keeping and using the phone you already have. My husband will definitely keep his iPhone should we decide to switch all of our phones to Walmart Family Mobile.

In addition to the iPhone, there are some other really nice phones to choose from with Walmart Family Mobile (including the Samsung Galaxy S4,GSII, GSIII, Samsung T139, Optimus L9, Concord, Alcatel 606A and myTouch). The phones range in price from $29.88 (Samsung T139) to $649.88 (Samsung Galaxy S4). I opted for the myTouch ($129.88), as I was interested in comparing the Droid platform to my iPhone.

The first two Walmart stores I went to didn’t have the myTouch in stock, but I did find it at the third store, thank goodness. I also picked up the starter kit (which is required to use Walmart Family Mobile plans).

When I got home, I inserted the battery and SIM Card, activated my phone (using the SIM # and activation code provided in the Starter Kit and the Serial Number from the box that my phone came in), and began using the phone right away.

The next step was to choose a plan. I decided on the unlimited talk, text and web for $39.88.  The other option was the Talk & Text plan for $29.88.  I filled out my name and billing address, chose to get a new phone number (you also have the option of keeping your old number), and I was all set. It was super easy and took me all of 5 minutes (after I had inserted the battery and SIM card in the phone).

When you choose a Walmart Family Mobile plan, you will not be tied into an annual contract, and there are no overages. You can mix and match plans to create the perfect plan for YOUR family. You might choose unlimited talk & text, or Unlimited talk, text & Web – it is up to you. I love the idea of customizable and unlimited plans! I am having fun playing with my new myTouch phone, and am very impressed with all that is can do, especially since it was so inexpensive, and so far I am loving Walmart Family Mobile!

If you are ready to save money on your family’s mobile phone bill, it is easy to get started:

  • Choose a plan
  • Choose a phone (or you can even use your own compatible device)
  • Buy a Starter Kit (you will need a starter kit for each line you want to activate – this one-time fee costs $25 each)
  • Pay at the register! You can choose to activate your plan in-store or online from the convenience of home (which I did).

In addition to the phone and starter kit, you may wish to purchase an Extras Pack which will allow you to play games, purchase ringtones, take advantage of long-distance calling and international roaming to select countries.

Another really nice thing about the Walmart Family Mobile plans is that there is no credit check required. A good friend of mine has terrible credit (through no fault of her own – long story), but when she wanted to get a smartphone, she had to wait, as all of the carriers she called wanted to check her credit. She has been using a pay as you go phone for the longest time, but is ready to upgrade to a smartphone to take advantage of all of the available features. I cannot wait to tell her about Walmart Family Mobile – this will be a perfect fit for she, her mother and her 16-year old son!

Paying your bill is super easy – it can be done online, by phone, in-store or by auto-pay from your credit/debit card or checking. When I signed up today, I wasn’t asked for credit card information, which was nice. Instead, I will receive a text a few days before my bill is due (my first bill will be prorated), and I will receive another reminder text shortly before it is due. Yes – it’s as simple as that. If I need to check on my account balance, see when a bill is due, etc., I can log onto my online account and information to find everything I need. I am estimating that we will save about $40 per month by switching to Walmart Family Mobile.

  1. I didn’t even know Wal-Mart had cell phone plans! Though these prices sound SO much more appealing than our current contracted bill. I may just have to look into this!

  2. I’m going to share with my husband! He’s forever complaining about our bill/contract. I think he’s going to be very pleased.

  3. Stephanie Phelps on

My husband and I have this and it is wonderful. We cut our bill in have by using this plan! Our phones work even when others want in areas were service is usually spotty

  4. Haven’t heard of the Walmart Family Plan before but will have to check them out, especially if they have iPhone and no cell phone contracts. Cell phone contracts are a big pet peeve of mine that’s why I refuse to sign up for one. I have an HTC Windows 8 Smartphone through Verizon and pay on a month-to-month basic as I hate getting locked into contracts. Cost me a little bit more monthly but that’s okay for now.

  5. wow, love that you can keep your same # and also your own device if you want and of course the cheaper prices, hubby and I have prepaid now, but with our daughter wanting her own phone soon… this might be the way to go. ON a regular plan my smartphone was almost $100 a month just for me! (and not unlimited either!)

  6. My friend has Walmart family mobile and she likes it. I have been considering changing when my contract phone is up.

  7. I am not a happy camper after reading this. I don’t have a smart phone yet and if I upgrade on our current plan (which is a contract plan of course) I have to pay an additional $30 a month. I cannot wait until it is over and I will most definitely check this out!

  8. I havent heard of this one before but I will surely check it out. It sounds great and I can get a second one added onto it. sounds easy to do

  9. I just switched to a prepaid plan for myself and was looking for one for my parents (they only use the talk feature, not text or data) and this seems like a good one for them. It would definitely be much cheaper for them!!!

Both my son and daughter have their plans through Walmart and love it. My daughter just got hers about 3 months ago. Purchased an iphone 5 and loves everything about this, great coverage and saved her lots of money

  11. Walmart is just around the corner in my neighborhood, I’ll check out their cell phoneplans, thanks for the information!

  12. This sounds like such a good plan. Our plan is expiring after the first of the year. We really need to look into the Walmart options. We have 4 of us on our plan and it cost and arm and a leg. Thanks!

I loathe Walmart. I would rather pay twice as much somewhere else than willingly choose to buy anything from them.

  14. sheila ressel on

Walmart has some really great deals on phones and phone plans. When I upgrade my phone I’m definitely gonna check out the options Walmart has available to me. I could really appreciate the savings.

Not getting into contracts, with small print would be awesome. The Walmart Family Mobile sounds like something we need to look into.

I’ve seen this and Wal-mart and it looks like such a great deal; unfortunately T-mobile doesn’t have service where I’m at :( But your review has made me sure that if they extend coverage to my home area I’ll definitely be switching over!

  17. I knew about straight talk plans but I did not know they had these..Too bad since I just bought my son a straight talk phone and bought him unlimited minutes or I would have checked into this :(

  18. Haven’t heard of the Walmart Family Plan before but will have to check them out. I like that that I can keep my phone.

  19. I’m very impressed with the Walmart plans and have recently changed my service because the savings is significant and the service excellent.

  20. Susan Marina Brown Lane on

I get straight talk from Walmart and have been really happy with it for the past 2 years. In a few years, my kids will be old enough to be on a plan – it looks like this one may be the one I use!

  21. We dont have the walmart family mobile in my hometown, if we did then i would start going that route rather then pay the $80 mo i pay thru verizon

  22. my hubby and i might have to think about doing this. we’re downgrading our expenses lately because of a pay decrease. then we’re not locked into a contract either – love that regardless!

  23. Michelle Small on

Great post! I have been looking into walmart family mobile. My family could save so much money having service through them.

  24. I love that you can keep your old number. I’ve had my own number for so long it would be hard to let it go! Giving up the contract however would be so easy and wonderful!
