Fast forward a few centuries to the 17th century United Kingdom where ‘Mothering Sunday’ is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The day was originally designed to honor one’s ‘mother’ or primary church, but eventually turned secular to celebrate biological mothers, as well as grandmothers or females that have cared for a person.
Mother’s Day was brought to the United States by a woman named Anna Marie Jarvis to honor Mother’s and all the work they do. She was inspired by her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who helped start the Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to help and teach women to take care of their children before the start of the Civil War. After the end of the war, Ann developed Mothers Friendship Day to help promote reconciliation between Union and Confederate soldiers.
After Ann’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis wanted to find a way to honor both her mother’s work, as well as all of the work done by mothers in general. The first incarnation of Mother’s Day was created in 1908 and became officially recognized as a national holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Part of the original tradition that has faded away today was the wearing of a white carnation, the favorite flow of Jarvis’ mother, as a pin. White carnations in Australia are used to honor a mother that is no longer with us, while colored carnations indicate that the mother is still alive.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in many cultures, and countries such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, India, China, and South Africa share the same traditions that are celebrated in the United States. In Spain, the holiday is celebrated on December 8th and honors both biological mothers and the Virgin Mary. During the time of the Soviet Union, International Women’s Day (March 8th) was used to celebrate and is still the time to give gifts to Mom, despite the official date in Russia is the last Sunday in November. In Thailand, Mother’s Day is observed on the birthday of the Queen to celebrate her Highness as well as motherhood in general.
The gifts also differ across cultures. In England, almond cakes known as ‘mothering cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake’ are commonly given. In Mexico, Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants, as many take their madres out to dinner. In Thailand, the most common gift is jasmine, which represents gentleness and motherhood.
