When was the last time you were in a picture with your kids? Mamas are normally the ones carrying around the camera right? I was asked this question by a close friend of mine a few years ago and sadly I was not in very many at all. I am older, my hair isn’t done most days, and I would love to shed the 20 extra pounds that I now carry after birthing my girls. These are reasons inside of my head. Do you have similar excuses? I love taking pictures but I don’t love being on the other side of the camera so when my friend said that it got me thinking.
When I was 4 years old my mother died in a car accident and I have only one picture of her and I together. The reason that I started to blog was so that my girls would know me as a woman and not just as their mother. Most of the time I blog about them but it is still my voice. These girls see me everyday without my hair done and they still tell me I am beautiful so what was holding me back? Two years ago I decided to try and take a picture of the girls and I each month. We did it most months and continue to this year as well. This year I am completely stepping out of my comfort zone and doing a 52 week project of self portraits. I am hoping to challenge myself creatively and who knows maybe I will get a new Facebook profile picture out of it. It was very difficult to do since looking at yourself is hard for most but I am getting over that.
Another thing that I decided to do was the Monday Mingle. For me the mingle is even harder than my 52 week self portrait project because you have to listen to yourself speak as well as see yourself. No photoshop on the video camera. I am still not really comfortable doing them and I can’t watch them when I am done but hubs tells me I do just fine. What about you? How many photos are you in with your kids? I challenge each person who reads this to go out and take a picture of you and your family. Doesn’t have to be professional or anything more than setting the timer and running but take that picture. Seriously you won’t be sorry that you did.
This was my first self portrait. I couldn’t even look at the camera! If you want to join up with that challenge check out my blog The Lucas Zoo for weekly posts.
