entwine Wines Review

I am a casual wine drinker. I lack the ability to sniff a glass of wine and tell you the region where it was made or that it has notes of peach or chocolate. Nope, that’s not me. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like wine–I just need a little bit of help when it comes to pairing it up with meals. I know I’m not alone in this and for those of us who are wine novices, Food Network has partnered with Wente Vineyards to bring us entwine.

entwine is wine made for people like you and me–people who enjoy wine, but are shaky with food pairings. Currently entwine offers Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Merlot. Each bottle includes food and recipe suggestions on the back label and even more suggestions can be found the entwine website. Being a bit of a foodie, I found myself completely enamored with the entwine website. But since with Food Network behind it, I really shouldn’t have been surprised about how awesome it is. Here are just a few of the pairings I found:
entwine line-up
Veggie Stack Pita Pockets
Spring Celebration Carrot Cake
Mac & Cheese with Red Peppers & Tomatoes

Pinot Grigio
Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie (YES PLEASE!)
Buffalo-Style Chicken Wings
Shrimp Salad with Mango and Lime

Whoopee Pies
Mashed Potatoes
Cinnamon Sugar French-Style Texas Toast

Cabernet Sauvignon
Heirloom Tomato & Mint Salad
Grilled T-Bones with Chipotle-Lime Butter
Gluten-Free Chocolate Frangipane Tart

Who knew, right? Between the recipes online and the suggestions on the back of the bottles, I’m starting to get a better idea of how to pair these wines. Merlot, for example, seems to go well with richer foods (and that includes comfort food–hello, mashed potatoes!). Knowing this, I made a shepherd’s pie and paired it with entwine merlot. I definitely noticed the rich, fruity flavors of plum and cherry shining through with this wine and, although it took me a while, eventually I picked up on the notes of black tea as well. If it’s possible for a wine to be hearty, this one was, and I suppose that’s why it goes so well with comfort foods. The entwine chardonnay was also fruity, but in a much lighter, crisper sense. I decided to pair it with mushroom veggie burgers and home fries–a perfect casual meal!

Like entwine on Facebook or find at a store near you using the entwine store locator. (Currently, entwine hasn’t rolled out to retail locations yet, but it can be bought online.)
