Death is a subject that nobody wants to talk about, but ensuring that your family is taken care after your passing is a subject that needs to be discussed while you are still alive.
You may already know that my husband is a Police Captain, and currently he works behind a desk most days (thank goodness!). It wasn’t always this way though. When we were first married, he was an officer out on the streets, and I was one worried wife. What would I do if something happened to him? Of course things can happen in the blink of an eye, in any profession, but him being so close to criminals on a daily basis made me worry just a bit more perhaps. We had small children and since I was a stay-at-home mom, I had no idea what I would do in this situation. Not only would I be dealing with tremendous grief, but I would be struggling to figure out how my children and I would survive without his salary.
After I discussed my concerns with him, we started talking about life insurance and how it could offer me peace of mind. I also mentioned to him that we should consider getting life insurance for me as well, since he would have to find childcare and make other arrangements if something were to happen to me. He understood and agreed that it would be beneficial for both of us to have life insurance.
As the years have passed, and my husband has promoted to a job behind the desk, I feel at ease. This feeling of comfort is partially because of his “safer” position, and partially because I know we will each be okay if something happens to one of us. Life is uncertain, but planning ahead can make a big difference when you need the help the most. Speaking of planning ahead, the next thing on our “to-do” list is making sure we have a living trust in place. My dad passed away last year, and he had a living trust which has helped us immensely.
Sometimes being a “grown-up” and doing the right things is no fun, but they are necessary nonetheless.
I encourage you to take a look at different types of life insurance – there are several to choose from and most likely one that will suit your families needs, just as ours has. You might also want to read this article, Life Insurance 101 for some great information.
