All 4 of my kids have some type of delay/special needs. Jeffery has ADHD, Depression and Sensory issues, Jaylin has Anxiety, Jaxon has a speech delay and Justin is developmentally delayed (although he’s catching up!) Because of their issues, I’m always looking for new ways to help them. I have recently fallen in love with Super Duper Publications and even more since they sent me four games to review for my kiddos.
The first game I played with my kids was Lids ‘n Lizards. It’s a game that can help a child in many ways with things such as articulation, describing, categorizing, auditory and visual memory skills. I knew it would be a good game for Jaxon to play to help with his speech without him knowing I was trying to get him to talk more. I let the big kids play with us too and altered the game for them to make it a little challenging for them. Lids ‘n Lizards has directions for different ways to play that can help in different skill levels. In the box you’ll find 50 round magnets (1½” diameter), 20 tin lids (3″ diameter), 12 lizards and an instruction booklet.
My kids had fun with it, Jaxon was able to say a few of the words and the big kids were doing great with figuring out which magnet was different from the others even when it was something like colors instead of category. There are 10 magnets for each category and the categories are Food, Animals, Clothing, Transportation and Around the Home.
You can buy Lids ‘n Lizards from Super Duper Publications for $39.95. It’s great for kids from Pre-k through 5th grade!
A game I played with just the 2 big kids and Jeff was All About You, All About Me Fun Deck®. It was fun to learn a few new things about my kids and even my husband. All About You, All About Me Fun Deck® comes with 56 question cards and a sturdy storage tin.
We spread cards out on the floor face down and took turns picking a card up and answering it. Since I’m starting my own Girl Scout troop, I plan to take this game to the first meeting so all the girls can get to know each other all the while playing a fun game. This is going to be good for Jaylin, she sometimes can be shy but if she’s playing a game she knows she’ll open up more.
All About You, All About Me Fun Deck® is $12.95 and for Pre-K to 5th grade.
I also played TopicTalk™ Conversation Card Game with the big kids. This was to get their conversation skills up. The game comes with 75 Topic Cards, 70 Talk Cards (30 Question Cards, 20 DoubleTalk Cards and 10 Wild Cards). Also included is a 5-minute timer for advanced play to extend the conversation. Starting with 7 Talk Cards for each player, the goal is to get rid of all your cards first by using your cards to ask questions or make comments about the topic. This was a good game for Jaylin because of her anxiety she don’t hold conversations much with others often. Asking questions and making comments to keep the topic going was a great way to get the kids talking. After a few times we’ll probably add the timer to make it a little more difficult to hold the conversation for 5 minutes then switch topics.
TopicTalk™ Conversation Card Game is $32.95 and for grades 2 & up.
Last but definitely not least is MagneTalk Early Classifying. This game is great for classifying, vocabulary, critical thinking, and fine motor skills. It comes with a magnetic board and 35 photo magnetic tiles in 5 different categories (Transportation, Clothing, Animals, Food, and Around The House).
Jaxon did so much better with this game than I initially thought. The only problem we had was me trying to explain to him what “transportation” was to put the vehicles there, after a few he understood though. While going through the cards he surprised me with so many sounds and motions I didn’t know he knew. Jaxon may not have a huge vocabulary but he does have his own way of communicating with us. In the video below you can see him playing the game, this was straight out of the box…his first time playing it. My favorites are the horse sound, the airplane, the “nom nom nom” for cookie and the fire truck at the end. I have showed this video to Jaxon’s current speech therapist, his old therapists and his current teachers and they ALL loved how he did with it and they love the game itself, asking where it come from.
You can get these games and more from Super Duper Publications!
One winner will get their choice of one (1) of the above games (MagneTalk Early Classifying, Lids ‘n Lizards® Magnetic Photo Vocabulary Game, TopicTalk™ Conversation Card Game or All About You, All About Me Fun Deck)
