My sons ride the bus to and from school every day. Sometimes it’s difficult to send them off on a vehicle with someone other than myself or my husband driving. Because, if you’re a parent, you know that having children out there in the world without you is like having your heart walking around outside your body. It’s hard, gut-wrenching and at times, nerve wracking. You have to trust that your kids are being driven to school and back safely by another person, whom you most likely, don’t know very well.
That’s why I am so excited about the SafeStop mobile app that connects parents and school personnel with the buses transporting their students. The SafeStop app provides parents with a real-time map that shows where the bus is located and tells the estimated arrivals times to the school and the bus stop. This is very convenient for me because our driveway is 1/3 of a mile long and I can’t see the bus from our home. The SafeStop app would allow me to know an approximate time that my boys will be picked up and dropped off so I would know a good time to be there to drop them off for the bus in the morning and pick them up off the bus in the afternoon.
The SafeStop app also communicates important messages in its alert and messaging center. It shows important alerts such as school closings and delays, early dismissals and other important school events. That way you’ll always be the first to know about the important happenings with your child’s school. I know many parents rely on their local news channel for delays and closings but what if you can’t be in front of your television? The SafeStop mobile app will be there to notify you of these important events no matter where you are, so long as you have internet access and your cellular phone, computer or tablet.
You can download the SafeStop app from the Apple App Store and Google Play and as of July 2015 it is available in 12 states in the US. It is available to any school or district in North America that have GPS hardware on their school vehicles. You can visit SafeStopApp.com to check to see if SafeStop is available in your school district. It’s not available in our district yet but I plan on making the suggestion to our school board at the next meeting. I think this app is a wonderful way to have peace of mind and I hope that many more schools will jump on board with the app in the coming months.
If your school district uses SafeStop you can sign up through the school’s private portal and easily and securely register online, manage the details of your account and make payments. The SafeStop app is available for a low monthly fee and in some districts it is subsidized by the school making it available at a lower cost or even free.
If you would like to have SafeStop available at your school there is a handy place to click on the SafeStop website that allows you to contact SafeStop and show your interest.
