I spoke to the founder, Jenny Thompson, and learned more about it. She said that SafetyPIN is basically like a ‘Trust Badge’ for the internet age, and it’s something we all really need to look for!
SafetyPIN offers peace of mind
Think about it – these days we use the internet for everything – hiring a babysitter, house sitter, renting out a home or apartment, and we even use the internet for dating. The problem with these things is that we know almost nothing about the person we’re about to meet or hire, and let into our home, and around our kids.
That’s where SafetyPIN comes in. It’s the best way to know someone you met online is safe to meet offline. The company developed this really neat proprietary process that goes way beyond the standard background check. They do that, too, but they don’t stop there.
SafetyPIN screens someone’s criminal, financial, and personal history. After all, it’s not only about staying safe, we also don’t want to get ripped off! But here’s where it gets really interesting. They take that information and combine it with a behavioral profile. Law enforcement professionals and criminal profilers help with this process.
Let’s face it, there are people that have clean backgrounds and seem to be the perfect fit, but we still don’t feel comfortable having around him or her around our kids. SafetyPIN has found a way to weed those people out. If a person meets the requirements, they will get a unique SafetyPIN. So when you see that number, you know the person is someone you can trust – in your home and around your family. In a nutshell, SafetyPIN offers peace of mind!
Jenny shared a crazy story about the dog sitter she hired from a Craigslists ad who actually faked her own death. Can you imagine?? After she told me that, we dove into the details. I wanted to know how they do what they do – and whether we can really trust it.
It turns out that they access over 10,000 data sources, and work with expert advisors who have over 60 years of experience in criminal profiling and clinical psychology. The whole process is really simple and painless. For a person to get their pin, they just need to to sign up, provide some basic information and answer a few short questions. The whole application process takes about 5 minutes.
Then, once someone is approved (usually within 24 hours), they can share your SafetyPIN with anyone on any website.
And SafetyPIN isn’t just concerned about keeping you safe. They keep your data safe, too.
Your data and your privacy are protected using up-to-the-minute encryption and security technologies, as well as best practices.
Plus, people can only see your SafetyPIN ID, never your personal information. And you control who can see even that.
I love this idea. It makes me feel so much better about hiring a new housecleaner, handyman, tutor, etc. It is really handy (and comforting) to anyone who’s going to be around me and my family. Starting today I’m going to ask for (and verify!) a SafetyPIN before we hire anyone new. And you should, too!
There is really no reason for everyone not to have a SafetyPIN…it let’s others trust you, and allows you to trust others.
