What is “normal?”

Norman Babcock is far from being considered as such. As a resident of a quaint New England town, this 11-year-old boy is the lonesome, misunderstood type. Everyone has him pinned as a freak because he claims that he can communicate the dead. Of course, talking with the dead doesn’t go over well with the living – but can he?

ParaNorman movie

ParaNorman, a 3D stop-motion comedy thriller directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell, is about the fear of the unknown and how society reacts in order to deal with it. We are introduced to a typical middle school boy, Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), that has a liking for monster movies, but soon learn that his hobby goes far beyond the screen. He has a sixth sense (pun intended) that allows him to see and speak with ghosts. As much as he craves solitude, he does not hide his ability. Regardless of what others may think, he speaks of it with such openness as only a child can.

Blithe Hollow is a quaint town that celebrates its history but no longer believes in witches and zombies. To the shock of the residents, it’s the 300th anniversary of the town’s very own Puritan witch trial that sets the stage for a supernatural showdown complete with a very vengeful, former-resident witch. Can Norman, our unintentionally gothic hero, take on the ghouls and grown-ups in order to save the townspeople from a centuries-old curse? Or will his paranormal activities be pushed to their otherworldly limits?

Not only is ParaNorman a humorous and family-friendly take on horror movies with a well-timed “zombie apocalypse” theme but it’s just as entertaining for Mom and Dad as it is for the kids!

  12. I went and saw the movie tonight! (well technically last night) It was cute and funny! The moment you see Normans slippers in the movie I gasped and said “I want those!!!”

  13. ‘I first heard about ParaNorman when I visited C2E2 in Chicago just this year. The second I saw the costumed characters of ‘Norman’ and some of the Undead Zombies, I instantly knew the creators from Laika were the ones promoting the film. I took a photo with the characters, got a cool ParaNorman bumper sticker and poster, and from that point, I began keeping track on all the updates on the movie. I followed ParaNorman on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Anything just to let me see the magic behind the making of the movie. Soon enough, it was finally the release date of the movie, and I saw it the same day at the local movie theater! As I had expected, the movie did not disappoint. From the unique non-stop animation, the engaging and funny storyline, and Norman’s awesome hair style, I was immersed. The beautiful colors and edgy look given to the characters and environments were top notch! Each character easily represented someone or some people we have or still do, deal with in our lives. They all seemed so real. That’s what I love about Laika’s awesome creations. They did a brilliant job on Coraline, and an even better job with ParaNorman. Last, but not least… THE SOUNDTRACK. It was BEAUTIFUL! I didn’t so much as enjoy it the first time seeing the movie, but the second time was just plain awesome. Animation is a big part of my life, so of course I’ve already seen the movie two times, and I suggest any of you to go out and see it as many times as possible. This movie was totally worth it. Out of five stars I would give ParaNorman a zombifying… 4 1/2 stars!

  14. I saw Paranorman this past weekend and I absolutely adored it! All the characters were unique and charming with quirky little twists on the standard archetypes; and the animation was, of course, a stunning feast for the eyes. I plan on seeing it again in 3D for the full effect!

  16. Already seen ParaNorman, and absolutely love it! Can’t wait for everyone and their kids to see it — I know I’ll be dragging one princess-loving child and another Hulk enthusiast, hopefully this weekend. 🙂 Adults, you will love sitting through this one; LAIKA is not making a “kid’s movie” here.
