Nissan Red Thumb Movement – Pledge to put your phone down while driving

The world has changed so many ways in the past decade or so. Some things are very helpful and we have come to depend on them – such as our smartphones. The not-so-good part of the convenience of cell phones though, is that people still tend to use their phones while driving.

Nissan and their #RedThumb movement wants folks to remember to put their phones down while driving, and I am SO happy they are encouraging this, as I have heard so many horror stories. On a daily basis, I see people using their phones while driving, and it just makes me cringe. So often I find a car driving next to me coming in my lane. It never fails when I look at the driver, they are looking at their phone. Not only are they endangering themselves, but they are risking the lives of others by being so careless.

Here is a video that explains about the #RedThumb movement:

I suggest that you either turn off your phone while driving, so you don’t get tempted to look when a notification pops up, or “dings”. Another option is to put your phone in the back seat, out of reach. Is there really anything so important that it can’t wait? Before we had cell phones, we managed just fine, waiting until we reached our destination to make or receive a call.

Can I count on you to take the pledge with me? It is really easy, and by doing this you can help spread awareness of the dangers of using the phone while driving. Please also encourage your friends and family members (including teens!) to take the pledge.

Take a picture of your thumb, decorated red, however you want to do it. You can use fingernail polish and paint your thumbnail red, color it with an ink pen, or any other way. After you take your picture, post your photo on social media using #RedThumb.

Thanks for reading, and for participating in the Nissan Red Thumb movement!

  1. Absolutely! I’m adamantly against any use of handheld devices while driving, so I’ll be taking the pledge and encouraging all of my relatives and friends to do the same.

  2. I’ll take the pledge. One of my pet peeves is texting while driving. Nobody dares to do that while I’m in the car!

  3. I have nobody close to me to whom this applies to, lucky me. As someone who travels for a living & experiences the threat of texting drivers on a frighteningly regular basis, I applaud the sponsors of this program.

  4. No texting and driving is what I always say to my family as they walk out the door. Its just not that important to risk your life. I will be sharing with everyone.

  5. Everybody knows my view of phones and driving. Neither go together, but especially texting! I can’t believe people do this and so many people get irreversibly hurt because of it. I doubt I share the campaign because I think a red thumb thing is kind of lame, but I do like the attention being drawn to it.

  6. yes i already take the pledge i hate driving around people who are talk or texting on their phones, they do not pay attention, and i will be sharing this

  7. Yes, I’ll be sharing/reminding friends about how dangerous cell phone distraction can be. I’ve seen people on the road texting and swerving into other lanes…really scary stuff.
