My daughter has been gone for 19 days now (not that I’m counting or anything).  She left for Germany on June 21st and it has been extremely hard on her dad and I, and her as well.  We are a very close family, and there is such a void without her in the house.  We have been using Skype pretty much daily, to communicate with her, and my husband and I were just saying this morning that we don’t know what we would have done all this time without it.

Since she couldn’t take her cell phone with her (for several reasons), Skype is our ONLY way of communication, and to see her beautiful face during video chats is priceless. Absolutely priceless.  She is thrilled to see us too (although sometimes we aren’t showered yet because of the time difference!), but she doesn’t seem to mind.

We have used Skype in quite a few ways. My husband and I were having video chats on my computer and my daughter was on her iPad. She and I would also have conversations via instant messaging several times a day. Now this is big: My husband downloaded Skype on his iPad! He is technologically challenged (bless his heart), so this really says something. It says how very much he misses his daughter and wants to see her face and talk to her often via chat as well. Sometimes if we just want to her her voice (and her to hear ours), we just do a voice chat.

Group chats were a breeze when my husband was our house and I was at our vacation home. We were able to all see each other’s faces and it was fantastic! We simply planned a time to “meet” and talk.
Have I mentioned how easy Skype is? There is really nothing to it – just dial out or click on the video camera to start a video chat!

Skype has been a huge blessing for us during this time that my daughter is gone. She will be back in one week, and we will be using Skype faithfully for the remainder of her trip.

My brother is heading to Hawaii in September and I have a feeling that Skype will also be my BFF then too. We are really close, and to be able to talk to him face-to-face (and hopefully get a glance at the beautiful scenery) will be so fun.

Regular phone calls can be made via Skype too. Although credits are needed to do this, it is a great option if you don’t want to have a home phone and only make occasional calls.

I hope you’ll think about Skype for Summer Travels – it just might keep you from missing someone too much.
