Laundry detergent – ways to save!

Laundry detergent can be expensive…there is no doubt about it. If you are a large family (or even a small family with really dirty clothes), the cost of doing laundry can be quite high. Good news – there are a few ways to cut these expenses!

Of course, one of the most effective ways to reduce laundry costs immediately is to purchase an energy efficient (HE) Washer and Dryer. They can be expensive initially, but over time you will save quite a bit of money. Not everyone can afford these, however, but they are definitely worth budgeting for. We have had our HE washer and dryer for several years now, and the savings really are substantial. It still amazes me how little detergent is needed to get my clothes, towels and blankets clean. I also love how much room they have, which enables me to wash more clothes at a time. I love this!

There are a few other solutions I have come up with to save money even if you do not have a fancy washer and dryer:

1) Instead of doing laundry daily, pick three days of the week as “laundry days”. The first day should be for towels, medium colors. The second can be for dark colors and the third maybe whites. Of course you can mix this up any way that works best for you. But by picking certain days for certain loads, it will eliminate the need to do each (and more, smaller loads) in one day.

2) Another way you can save money is to use concentrated detergent.  Many times when we use a detergent that is not concentrated, it is easy to use more than is necessary.  If you are going through bottles of regular detergent at a rapid pace, this might be why. Concentrated detergent (and even fabric softener and bleach) can go much, much further!

3) Coupons! Need I say more? Everyone loves coupons and you can almost always find savings on laundry products in the newpaper inserts, online and by signing up for email deals from various detergent companies.  Of course you will always find big savings on Arm & Hammer Plus OxiClean Power Gel Laundry Detergent – make sure you go to their savings page linked below!

I would love to hear any tips or tricks you have for saving money on laundry!

  1. I SO want an HE washer and dryer – I even know which one I want… just have to save up the money. We only do laundry once a week or so because there are just the two of us, but of course I have to do a load of my doggie’s clothes, TeeHee!
I also use coupons – don’t leave home without them – and buy in bulk at BJ’s.
