The importance of family time

The importance of family time

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to spend time with family on a regular basis. In this day and age, it has become very challenging to put our phones down, remove the distractions, and just have a simple family meal together. Some parents may be more lax than others in how meals and other family dynamics work. But as children are growing up, it is vital to instill in them the habit of spending time together.

If you are finding it hard to think of things to do with your children or your whole family, here are some suggestions:

Do an outdoor activity together

Putting the gadgets down and being one with nature for a decent amount of time is one of the benefits of a family outdoor activity, apart from bonding with one another. Doing something together outdoors fosters bonds with different family members, helps educate your children about nature, and strengthens the overall family dynamic.

Try something artistic

You can make crafts, do-it-yourself activities, painting, or even something like dancing in order to get a bit more physical activity into your day. Apart from the meditative benefits of these activities, you may also discover that some of your kids have hidden talents that you were not aware of. Doing these activities together may help relieve them of their shyness and become more open about their interests with you.

Schedule some unwinding and relaxing time together as well

You may have incurred some aches and pains by the end of the week, from work and from all your other activities. You can go to a massage therapist Okotoks and schedule a healing session together.

Have meals together frequently during the week

If all these ideas are too taxing for your schedules, it is actually enough to have, at the very least, a few meals together as a family during the week. This encourages communication, openness, and vulnerability with family members. It also helps keep everyone in check and see if they are still doing okay or if they need help with any particular aspect in their lives.

These are just some of the suggested activities you can do to foster and strengthen family bonds. It is important to spend time with family members, most especially now that there are so many other stimuli readily available to kids – and parents cannot control them as tightly as desired, because of the vastness of the internet. The mental health issues that arise from all this unrestrained exposure to the outside world are rampant, and now more than ever, a good foundation in the home can be the number one prevention for the development of these issues.

It is also important to emphasize a good family culture. Regular bonding moments keep the lines open for the children to express their needs and have a sense of safety – a haven from the outside world. Constant communication and availability within family members will help them see that help is always accessible when they need it. This sense of support is vital, especially among adolescents.
