Have a budget
A budget is important, particularly if you’re asking for the services of an interior designer. Not only will have have  a fee for their services, but also all of the items they pick out, then the final bill will need to be paid.  Sometimes this might need to be paid as you go, but it could need paying before or after, depending on how much the interior design has in disposable finances. It’s a little different for each person, so always ask them before you ask them to spend the money. Get a budget and an estimation of what you want to spend, or if it is only one room you are doing, then get an estimate  on how much will be spent on each item.

Make sure their style is similar to yours
With interior designers, they will certainly vary in their own personal tastes and styles. That might not be something that directly ties into what you like, so it’s good to think about what works best for you. Make sure you’re doing plenty of research into the interior designers that are available and which ones suit what you’re after. If you want an industrial type feel but they’re used to do very rustic interiors, then there might be more risk of confusion when it comes to styling.

Be realistic with your expectations
Your expectations might far exceed the budget you have available or the type of interior designer you have. The designs you have in mind and those that you’ve taken from online sources for inspiration may not be the same. Every interior design project is going to be slightly different, so keep your expectations open-minded and keep them low so that you don’t feel let down if it’s not exactly what you wanted.

It’s okay to say you don’t like something
If you’re not fond of  the color armchair that they’ve suggested or  the lamp that they’ve bought for the living room, don’t be afraid to speak up. Let’s face it; at the end of the day, you are the one  paying for it and you’ve got to live with it. So don’t be afraid to say “no” to something that you don’t care for. The more honest you can be with the designer, the quicker you’ll get to the end result.

Working with an interior designer is certainly an interesting experience, and it’s definitely something you should do if you’re not creatively driven towards your home. Try to keep the personality within your home and pick things that you enjoy looking at. Of course, it matters what guests think, but you have to live in it, so make sure it suits you.
