Painted Pine Cones (DIY Home Decor)

I was looking around the family room of the retirement home we bought, and my eye caught a glass bowl that I had filled with pine cones before Christmas. It looked a little bland, so I thought I would brighten them up a bit by giving the pine cones a little color, which would also really bring out the colors of the room.

I pulled out my huge collection of Acrylic Paint, and decided on a few colors that would match the other colors in the room.

Painted Pinecones

I took about seven pine cones and chose one paint color to start with. I painted the tops and tips at the end of a few scales on each pine cone. I went back and added a second coat, before moving on to the next color.

I let the pine cones dry overnight then I placed them back in the bowl. I was so happy with the results!

They really have helped to brighten up my family room.

I had so much fun doing this, that I started painting more pine cones to match the decor in my daughter’s room. Help me – I can’t stop!

Painted pine cones are such a fun and inexpensive way to update or refresh decor. The little bottles of Acrylic paints range from .69 to $1.29 or so at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. I usually wait until they are on sale and stock up. I also purchased the glass bowl at Hobby Lobby. They come in so many shapes and sizes – if you bought a large glass bowl or vase, you could have quite a centerpiece! I bought the pine cones at the grocery store during the holidays, but you can either take a walk and collect them, if you live in an area where there are pine cones, or keep your eye out for them at your grocery store or even home improvement stores.

  1. Love this idea! I have some places on a shelf that I have been looking to find some new decorations for. This is perfect… now to find some pinecones.
