What is Paleo?
I will go to the experts on this one, The Mayo Clinic. They define Paleo as, “A paleo diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — foods that in the past could be obtained by hunting and gathering”. To me, Paleo just means food we should be eating that is whole, and full of nutrients. It also avoids processed and refined foods. You can keep researching Paleo, but just know it means, eating whole foods. Pretty simple!
Can you have chocolate chips on Paleo?
I tend to leave this up to interpretation. I will use chocolate if its unrefined, dark, and does not have any added sugars, or if it uses natural sweeteners. Chocolate comes from a cacao plant, which would have been part of hunting and gathering in my book! Plus, there are so many health benefits to dark chocolate!
Should everyone eat Paleo?
I think personalized diets are critical to long-term health. With that being said, Paleo is not for everyone. Everyone needs to figure out what foods are good for them to eat, don’t cause reactions, and provide the best nutrition for their bodies. I think trends come and go, but the most important thing to remember is to eat real foods. Whatever that may look like, no need to put a name to it. It just so happens its easy to find recipes with the term Paleo.
