The Flowers of the San Diego Zoo – can you identify them?

While wondering through the San Diego Zoo, I was amazed to see the variety of unusual flowers that led the pathways, climbed the walls and just caught my attention. Though I live in California, these flowers are some that I have never seen before:

These flowers are fascinating. And HUGE.  The first photo below shows the bloom, and the second is the bud before the bloom:

Here is a collage of some other beauties that took our breath away:

And last but certainly not least:

Of course there were many, many more flowers that I wanted to take photos of, but we were there for the animals mostly 🙂  Besides I think my husband was getting aggravated because I was holding up the show.

Can you identify any of the above flowers? I am completely stumped, and am hoping you can help.  I believe the red one on the top right hand side of collage is a Hibiscus, but I am not positive.  I would love to know what all of these are, and possibly plant some in my own yard!

  1. I’ll have to ask my dad- my family owned a plant nursery, but not in San Diego. I bet you could email the Zoological Society and see if someone will ID them for you, the groundskeepers probably know them all! The Zoo has an amazing collection of plants!

    1. That is a really good idea! I just might do that. I was really surprised at the plants and flowers at the zoo. I thought I knew about almost all flowers, but apparently not!

  2. Pretty sure that is a hibiscus, you’re right. If I found the right one, the bottom row in the collage is a vine called “Acanthus Family”.

I was in awe at the flowers we saw at the zoo. Definitely unlike anything I’ve seen in Washington LOL! I want to find out what the rest of them are called.

  3. The first photo is a pitcher plant, not sure about 2, 3 and 4 are pitcher plants, left hand corner of the first college is a succulent (type of cactus), on the right side its a hibiscus, not sure about the bottom two or the last one. But they are all tropical plants. It would be easy to take your photos into a garden nursery and ask a knowledgeable person about the rest. Good luck!

  4. Those flowers are beautiful. I know they can’t grow where I am because we have cold winters with snow (brrrrrr). I wouldn’t begin to know what their names are. I’m glad I read the comments and found out their names. Nice photos of the flowers! 🙂 They are very eye-catching!
