It’s almost here – Daylight Saving Time! Don’t forget to set your clocks forward on March 8th. How do you feel about DST? You will probably be either excited (yay!), or completely dread it (oh no!).

I personally think a lot of how you feel about Daylight Saving Time has to do with whether you have little ones in your home or not. I remember when my kids were little, I had a heck of a time getting them to sleep, the first few nights after DST, they would say, “But it’s still light out, why do we have to go to bed so early?”. Naturally, they would wake up very grumpy – and for the next few mornings too. Which in turn, made ME grumpy. Good times! So yes, I dreaded Daylight Saving Time back then (for a few days at least).

Now? Now I absolutely love DST! I enjoy staying outdoors for hours on end – gardening, painting, reading, etc. So I personally couldn’t be happier that it is almost here. It does take me a few days to adjust, however. I feel a little “off” for the first few days, but once my body adjusts, I am good to go and enjoy the longer days. I have more trouble adjusting when DST is over. The darkness really takes a toll on me.

Daylight Saving Time affects many adults (55% of US adults), and many for longer than just a few days. According to a survey, 81% of US adults don’t make any changes in preparation for the time change. When this happens, and they are sleep deprived, it can cause significant issues. I know the toll that sleep deprivation can take, as my daughter didn’t sleep for the better part of two years when she was a baby.  When DST arrives, many adults are late for work because they overslept, or couldn’t find their keys, purse, etc.

Speaking of finding (or not finding) things – where on earth does that extra hour of sleep go? My guess is that my cats buried it in their litter box. Yes, that definitely sounds like my cats! Since they can nap all day, DST doesn’t bother them too much. In fact, I think they really like Daylight Saving Time, because they get their breakfast a little bit earlier! Sneaky buggers.

There are several ways to survive through losing an hour of time. My suggestion would be to grab a good book and a soft, comfy blanket.

Do you occasionally have trouble falling asleep? ZzzQuil, from the makers of NyQuil, is a non-habit-forming sleep-aid which helps with occasional sleeplessness. It can help you to fall asleep easily, and wake up feeling refreshed. That is why I personally prefer ZzzQuil over other brands.
