Kids’ Mobile Phones Usage: There Are Actually Some Benefits

It’s one thing that, as parents, we feel we need to police, but also feel guilty of it at the same time. We can worry about screen time and online safety, but of course, we see how integrated technology is in daily life, and these conversations around a child’s mobile phone usage often focus on the risks, but we may want to think positively, in some respects, about what a smartphone or mobile phone can do for our children. Of course, there’s a massive caveat that it needs to come with thoughtful boundaries, but here are some reasons why mobile phones could be helpful tools in the long run:

Peace of Mind for You

Ultimately, one of the biggest advantages of giving your child a phone is the ability to stay in touch with them. If you are old enough to remember the times when you forgot to come home on time and couldn’t inform your parents, they would have been pacing the floor and incredibly worried, and no doubt you were in trouble as well when you got home.

When there’s concerns around mobile technology, it’s also important to better understand safety concerns, especially if you are wondering if you can put off giving your child a phone for as long as possible because of things like the electromagnetic fields, but you can see these wireless health facts to learn more about that. Ultimately, if they are walking home from school, attending a club, or visiting friends, instant communication is going to help you feel more reassured, but also you can make some more informed decisions with confidence around their safety overall.

It Encourages Independence

Mobile phones can be a stepping stone towards independence, as children learn responsibility for things like managing their device, setting alarms, checking schedules, or messaging parents about changes in plans, which can build a lot of self-reliance, and this means over time their confidence will increase exponentially in terms of handling everyday situations.

The Learning and Creativity Side of Things

Of course, we’ve all got that image of our children staring absent-mindedly at their screens, doom scrolling, and all of the things that we know about, but we just need to remember that actually, there’s a lot of resources that are bad for our children, and it’s about guiding them towards the better ones.

Simple research tools can allow children to explore subjects that interest them, but also think about more creative components like videos, photos, or basic coding apps, which will all encourage creativity and problem-solving in a fun and accessible way that doesn’t feel like education!

The Safety Features

While smartphone usage and regulations can feel like the Wild West, there’s more discussions about it now that there’s been a decade or so of research into general device usage, but there are a lot of built-in safety features that can be very reassuring for parents, such as location sharing, emergency contact, and quick call functions, which allow children to reach out if they are in trouble, but we can also use tracking apps to know where our children are, which is particularly useful during unfamiliar situations.

Of course, with all of this, balance is critical, and so we need to make sure that while there are positives, we have to embed clear rules around screen time, bedtime, and app usage so that phones remain a positive influence rather than an unhealthy distraction!
