Homeowners know there is always a list as long as your arm when it comes to home maintenance tasks. And while there are some that need to be carried out regularly, there are many that only need that infrequent check over and monitoring. Then there are those that fall through the gaps entirely.
And the problem with these is that the longer they’re left, the more expensive the resulting repairs or even replacement will be.
So let’s take a look at a few home maintenance tasks that people keep putting off, so you can make sure you’ve not overlooked them, too.

Cleaning the Gutters
Gutter cleaning is one of those tasks that’s really easy to overlook. And the reason is usually that no one pays much attention until something goes wrong, and even then, you might not notice immediately.
But if you have gutters that are blocked with leaves, debris, and compacted dirt, they cannot do their job properly. The water backs up and overflows and ends up where it should not be. And over time, this can cause damage to fascia, soffits, exterior walls, and, in more serious cases, the foundation.
You should be checking your gutters at least twice per year, once before winter hits and again in early spring. It’s not complicated, but if your gutters are hard to access, you can hire a gutter cleaning company to do this for you.
Servicing the Garage Door
The garage door is one of the hardest-working mechanical systems in most homes. The door is likely opened and closed multiple times per day every single day, and honestly, it’s also one of the things that hardly gets the attention it deserves.
Your garage door relies on springs, cable rollers, and the opener mechanism working cohesively. But over time, they can become worn down, and if you’re not maintaining your garage door, it’s likely to reach the failure point sooner rather than later, leaving you with a door you can’t use, and that is a safety risk.
Getting an annual service for garage doors is a small check once per year to identify any issues that are present or need addressing to avoid failure. The service involves lubricating the moving parts, checking the spring tension, testing the safety reversal on the opener, and inspecting the cables and rollers for wear. All of this keeps the system running smoothly and gives you a heads up before anything goes wrong.
Checking the Roof
The thing with the roof is it’s a case of out of sight, out of mind for the most part. And if you’re honest, when was the last time you thought about your roof? Most people don’t until it’s already damaged, and then it’s urgent.
A good compromise is to give your roof a visual inspection twice per year. You can combine with your gutter check if you wish, while you’re already focused on that part of the house.
You can inspect the roof with binoculars, or you can access the roof. It’s safe to do so or even use a drone and capture footage so you can see all parts of it without getting up there. Again, you can hire a local roofing company to carry out the inspection for you if you wish. You want to be looking for things like cracked, missing, or curling shingles, areas where flashing around chimneys or vents appears sunken or uneven, and anything else that looks a bit questionable.
