With boys, more often than not, we are always outdoors so long as the weather cooperates. Of course, however, there are always a handful of rainy days thrown into the mix and, for that, we turn to movies. Cuddling up with one another, a big bowl of popcorn, and enough hot chocolate to go around, rainy movie days are almost as fun as our outdoor adventures. That being said, we are always on the lookout for great movies that we can enjoy as a family. As we are, now, looking to adopt and welcome a dog into our family, the request as of lately has been for dog movies. Recently someone mentioned a brand new movie to me that fits the bill to a t – Against the Wild.

This lovely little film was recently released by Anchor Bay Entertainment and ties in aspects of, both, the great outdoors and an unbreakable (and sometimes surprising) family bond. We follow along as the age-old tale of two siblings quickly takes a turn for the dramatic when they find themselves stranded in the middle of the woods with nothing else aside from one another and their dog, an Alaskan Malamute.

“A gripping adventure for the whole family, Against the Wild begins with siblings Zach (CJ Adams) and Hannah (Erin Pitt) traveling by seaplane with Chinook, their Alaskan Malamute, to visit their father (Ted Whittall of “Beauty & The Beast”) for the weekend. When their plane encounters engine trouble, the pilot is forced to make an emergency landing in the woods in the middle of nowhere. As they travel on foot to seek help, Zach, Hannah, and their loyal companion come face-to-face with the challenges of the wilds – from wolves and grizzly bears to forest fires. Using all the wilderness skills they know – and with some help from Chinook, the siblings must work together to overcome each obstacle and conquer the ultimate goal – returning home again.”
Against the Wild boasts an incredible yet simple storyline that, while intriguing for the older age group, is still easy enough for younger audiences to follow along. The fear of the unknown and vast size of the surrounding forest holds much trouble for this duo but, when they work together, they soon learn that they truly can accomplish their goals. Through battles with nature, these children keep themselves and one another safe. And with help from their dog, they realize that loyalty and commitment to each other goes much deeper and means so much more than the trivial chaos of day to day home life.

As we watched this film with our young boys, I was thrilled with the message that the movie brought across. Despite not necessarily liking one another and getting along in each and every situation, at the end of the day, the bond between siblings and the power of teamwork will always prevail. The love and loyalty coupled with instances of spectacular strength and courage that is presented in this film makes it a wonderful movie for families in that it sets a great example for, both, children and adults.

One kid-friendly survival skills is if you find yourself lost at night, seek some sort of shelter to get out of the wind, and use a person or a pet for body warmth.
I have heard that you need to follow a river or stream as it flows downward and make camp away from the water in case of flooding.
Kid Friendly survival tip would be to always carry a whistle and stay in one spot under shelter of trees, away from the wind, and don’t panic, never go hiking or wandering in the woods without someone knowing where you are going and when you should be back.
to find some kind of shelter if you can, do not panic and watch where you are walking so that you don’t fall into a stream or go off a cliff.
I guess the best survival skill my kids have is to stay in one place and someone will find you.
We always try to have drinking water and trailmix with us.
my grandson is a boy scout and they have learned so much in the woods how to do with what they have
I don’t really have any outdoor skills 🙁 .
One Kid Friendly Tip Is To Always Have Plenty Of Water And Protein Packed Snacks.
I tell our kids always have matches and a blanket.
Thanks for the opportunity to enter the giveaway Against the Wild dvd! It looks awesome! Perfect for spring break entertainment!
Stay in one ace if you get lost and build a shelter with branches etc. to stay warm
All kids should know where the sun rises & sets, so they can tell approximate time & direction when they look up into the sky!
Take a whistle, know your address and phone number. And know your parents’ “real” names.
be mindful of your direction so you know how you got there
Stay where you are and wait for those searching for you to arrive.
In the movie Against the Wild Zach and Hannah utilize all of the wilderness skills they know. What are some of your favorite kid-friendly outdoor survival skills?

Always have safety pack with you that has water compass, matches and make sure to tell some where your going when you should be back
maybe not a survival skill, but one of the most important here in upstate NY right now is to be covered in clothes because the ticks are absolutely horrible up here in the spring and summer
Oh my kids are in trouble…I know absolutely nothing about outdoor survival…I’m an inside gal lol
A kid safe survival skill I always stressed to my son is to take drinking water, healthy snacks and a flashlight.
Always be prepared and carry the essentials like water (or a bottle to collect water), flashlight, batteries, and most definitely a first aid kit.
a kid safe survival skill is if u get lost to always stay in place and not to wonder off and get more lost!
Use whatever you can find to serve as insulation between your body and your coat.. It could be old newspaper , leaves etc.
