Teach Your Little Ones Sign Language with Baby Sign Language

October 7, 2014 by Angela 56 Comments

I have an uncle who has been deaf his whole life.  Although he is a good lip reader, I really wish I knew more sign language so I can communicate with him better.  My sign language knowledge consists of the alphabet and a few words that we taught my oldest daughter when she was a baby (“more,” “please,” and “thank you”).

baby
I was excited to receive a Baby Sign Language kit so I can learn more signs and teach sign language to my children at the same time.  I received the Baby Sign Language Standard Kit, which includes a Baby Sign Language Comprehensive Teaching Guide, Baby Sign Language Official Reference Dictionary, flash cards, and a wall chart.

IMG_6492
The Baby Sign Language Comprehensive Teaching Guide is a great resource to start with when teaching your child sign language.  The most popular first signs for babies to learn are “milk,” “more,” “mom” or “dad,” “all done,” and “up” so we have started working on those signs.  While we are working slowly right now, the guide will come in handy once we master some basic signs and move on to eventually signing phrases and then fully communicating in sign language.

IMG_6485
The Baby Sign Language Official Reference Dictionary is another great resource.  It contains over 600 common words, numbers, and even the alphabet.  I tried teaching my daughter “K” for her name (which was a little difficult) and “L” for her little sister’s name (which was way easier).

IMG_6479
The wall chart contains illustrations of 22 basic signs (my daughter thought “car” was fun).  I definitely need to hang this up somewhere in my house so we can all work on these signs together.

IMG_6481
There are 52 flash cards in the kit that you can use to teach basic signs and words that children use often (like “baby” as shown by my daughter).  One side of the flash card has the word and a picture, and the other side has an illustration of how to perform the sign.

IMG_6314
I was really impressed with the Baby Sign Language Standard Kit.  The guide and dictionary are easy to use, the illustrations are great and easy to understand, and I look forward to using it more and more.  I am also excited to teach my children sign language skills.

You can purchase Baby Sign Language products online.  The Standard Kit sells for $39.99, or you can look for a different kit or individual items (guide, dictionary, flash cards, wall chart, or DVDs).  You can also download and print your own flash cards or wall chart, or just look up words in the online dictionary with a video demonstration of the sign.  You also have a chance to win your very own Baby Sign Language Standard Kit here!

I don’t have children, but I think it’s important for them to learn sign language. I grew up raised by a deaf aunt and she taught me from an early age.

This looks like such a great starter kit. It’s amazing a child’s world once they can learn to communicate.

This is great and something all kids I believe would like to pick up. I know my kids had learned a couple signs and use them often just because they know them now.

My son is non-verbal right now so I am trying to teach him to sign for the things he wants. For example, eat, drink, more. He is 3 and on the Autism Spectrum so his speech is delayed but any form of communication would help him to express himself.
