Back to Nature Mac and Cheese Taste Test Challenge

Organic Mac and Cheese Taste Test

I was invited to do a fun taste test, comparing Back to Nature Organic Mac and Cheese with a leading competitor. Since my family loves Mac and Cheese, I thought, why not? Not only do we love this as a side dish, I was happy to try organic varieties.

My daughter invited a couple of friends over, so we could get a few opinions of the two brands. I prepared both varieties of the Mac and Cheese, according to the directions on the box, but I didn’t let them see which brand was which when I was cooking them, or when I put them into bowls.

We blindfolded my daughter (just for fun, really), and she was our first taste tester.  Brand A was the competitor, and Brand B was Back to Nature Mac and Cheese.  Both were the seashell shapes, and looked very similar, except Brand B (Back to Nature) had shells that were a little bit smaller, and the orange wasn’t as “bright”.  She sampled each and announced that she liked Brand B better (her actual words were, “It’s pretty awesome”. I asked her why and she said that it was really creamy and cheesy – more than Brand A. She thought that Brand B was just more flavorful, and much creamier.

Next up was her friend. She didn’t know which Mac and Cheese that my daughter had picked as her favorite. She tasted both and determined that she too, liked Brand B (Back to Nature) better. She said that it was creamier and had a better texture. She said that Brand A reminded her of regular ol’ Mac and Cheese, and that Brand B tasted more like homemade.

Next up was my daughter’s other friend. After trying both, she said that Brand A was heavier than Brand B, and that Brand B was lighter and had a more “buttery” taste.

My 22-year old son strolled in the kitchen, and of course, we asked his opinion. He actually liked Brand A better, but didn’t give a reason. Again, he is 22 and pretty vague in general. I tried both brands, and I liked them both, but for different reasons. I didn’t much care for the texture of Brand B. I do think it was cheesier than Brand A, and I also found that Brand A tasted more like your average Mac and Cheese in a box. But I actually liked that.

So there you have it! We had a blast doing this taste test, and the winner was Back to Nature Organic Mac and Cheese. 3 out of 5 people preferred it over the leading competitor’s brand.

When our taste test was over, I let the girls dive into both bowls of Mac and Cheese.  They ate their favorite kind first, then demolished the other brand’s Mac and Cheese.  It was a good day 🙂
