How To Get Your Kids To Play Outside More

Every year it seems like a battle of wills for parents to get their kids to unplug and head outdoors. With countless activities, shows, and video games vying for their attention it’s no wonder our children become quickly distracted indoors. As parents, we know that time spent outside in the fresh air is incredibly beneficial for our children but knowing how to encourage them can be difficult.

Create a reward system

Getting kids to spend time outside can be a challenge, but with a creative reward system, you can turn their hesitancy into enthusiasm. Offering treats, extra screen time, or a fun new toy for playing in the yard can be a great motivator for children. Allowing them to choose their reward and setting achievable goals can help them feel empowered and excited to get outside.

Plus, spending time outside has countless benefits for children, from improving their mood and reducing stress to positively impacting their overall health and well-being. Also, you can encourage your kids to play outside with friends or join outdoor sports in your area. This will help them stay physically active and develop social skills in the process.

Keep in mind that playing outside doesn’t have to involve expensive trips or organized activities. Even simple activities such as picking flowers, playing tag, or flying a kite can be enough to keep kids entertained while allowing them to get some much-needed fresh air and exercise.

Add outdoor toys or activities

Children are known for their boundless energy and need for constant stimulation. Investing in outdoor toys or activities for your kids can provide them with hours of entertainment, a chance to burn off some energy, and help them develop important physical skills. A trampoline is a classic option that can provide endless fun and is great for improving balance and coordination.

A basketball hoop can help develop hand-eye coordination and encourage teamwork. Water tables are perfect for hot summer days and provide a sensory experience that is both stimulating and refreshing. By playing pickleball with your kids, you can spend quality time together while teaching them the basics of a fun recreational sport. Regardless of which option you choose, adding outdoor toys to your yard will give your children something fun to do when they venture outdoors.

Set limits on electronics and TV time

In today’s digital age, it can be challenging to pry our kids away from their electronic devices and TV screens. However, it’s important to set limits on their usage before they become too reliant on technology. Encouraging outdoor playtime is an excellent way to get them to disconnect and enjoy the fresh air.

Ensure that your little ones understand that they need to finish playing outside before heading indoors to play video games or watch television. By setting these boundaries, you’re ensuring that your kids get physical exercise and a well-rounded childhood that doesn’t include just staring at screens all day.

Additionally, it’s important to practice what you preach when it comes to your own screen time. If you’re always glued to a device, your kids are likely to do the same. Spending quality family time outdoors without any technology can be a great way to bond and make lasting memories.

Make it fun

Stuck at home and running out of activities to keep the kids busy? Why not set up some obstacle courses and scavenger hunts right in your own backyard? Not only is it a great way for them to burn off some energy, but it also taps into their creativity and critical thinking skills as they navigate through challenges and clues.

Whether it’s hopping over hurdles, crawling through tunnels, or decoding hidden messages, these activities will have them excited and engaged for hours on end. Plus, it’s a perfect opportunity for some family bonding time as you cheer them on and celebrate their victories together. So get ready to unleash some outdoor fun and adventure right at home!
