We all have stories of something we did as a child that we got in trouble for even though we were trying to do the right thing. Here are a couple of true stories from my childhood and my husband’s. Bless our hearts, we tried!
Mom might have been short and sweet as pie, but all it took was one look from her to know I had “gone too far” {her words}. So this one time, at band camp… Errr wrong story. So this one time, when I was about 14 years old, I spied a pomegranate in the kitchen. Sweet! Being the perfect child I was *cough* I carried it over to the sink and the mayhem began.
I peeled the skin off a portion of it, and pulled the pomegranate in half. My stomach dropped as I saw a stream of juice heading for the thin white cotton curtains above the sink. Imagine curtains made of super thin bed sheets – that is what the material was. Cute little ruffly white curtains. I was panic stricken of course and frantically put a little water on the juice {which HAD in fact landed on the curtain}, and grabbed the soap. I was desperately scrubbing the curtain with both hands in a back and forth motion, when all of a sudden…RIP!
The curtain ripped – right there in my hands. But, but I was trying to do the right thing! When my mom saw this she was beyond mad. She was completely livid. I explained to her what had happened, but it didn’t matter. I got in big trouble.
My husband’s story: When my husband was a little boy, around 7 or 8 years old, he was playing football by himself in his backyard. Their house had a detached garage, and he was playing in the area between the house and garage. He was kicking the ball, having a grand old time. When his dad came out and told him not to kick the football because it might go through a window. No problem.
My husband (little boy) decided to just pretend kick. He was pretending the football was on the spike thingy {you know the thing that they use in football games? LOL I don’t know what it is called} and he was ‘air’ kicking the pretend ball. He was doing this for awhile, when all of a sudden his shoe came off and went flying into the garage window, shattering it into a million pieces. I’m sure the look on his face was priceless, but somehow his dad didn’t appreciate any of this.
Poor guy – he, too, was just trying to do what he was told and got in big trouble! I have to giggle every time I hear him tell this story. The visual just cracks me up. I always try to keep these stories in mind when I am mad at the kids for something. If they were really trying to do the right thing, and it just turned out bad, I do my best to be understanding. Has anything like this happened to you or someone you know?

But the shoe coming off?! That’s totally something that would happen to me. LMAO! That cracks me up.

Not me. I don’t think I was ever tring to do the right thing. For some reason I was always doing the wrong thing. I like your one tine at band camp, LOL. I always say that. Love the stories you shared.
LOL well at least you admit you were doing the wrong things 🙂 We always say “this one time at band camp” too…it’s just too funny!
I try to remain calm with things like this and I tell my kids if they tell me what happened (my son still tries to hide things!) I won’t be mad-unhappy yes, but mad no. Funny stories!
Right – or the dreaded “disappointed”. I always hated it when my mom said she was disappointed with me. That hurt worse than anything lol

I don’t remember ever getting in trouble trying to do the right thing in any specific instance – I do remember always trying to do the right thing and having it ending up being the wrong thing LOL sammiejanL40 at aol dot com

Those are really funny! I have also managed to break a window with my shoe after being told not to play with a ball inside the house, lol!
Aw poor guy. I swear things like that happened to me when I was younger like all of the time!
What a great post, I remember my parents digging through the drawers looking for enough change to buy a gallon of milk. When my mom returned with the milk she was getting some other things from the car so I offered to carry the milk…..well I dropped it and it busted everywhere.
Oh my gosh…especially on the shoe through the window.
Once I was helping my aunt with an important dinner party. She was already very stressed. I broke the bundt cake – cracked it right in half, down the middle. My uncle saved my hide! He frosted it carefully and told me he would make sure he was the one to cut the cake, and no one would be the wiser.
He saved me!

When my son does something like that, I always remind myself that we learn more from our failures than we do from our successes. It’s kept me from totally losing it several times while he was growing up (and more than a few now that he IS grown up! LOL)
