I think one of the best things to come along in a long time is telecommuting. Working from home is simply dreamy, and with internet we can be “in the office” if we need to. Virtually of course! Web conferencing has made it possible for so many people to work from home. Once or twice a week everyone can have an online meeting if necessary and catch up on the latest assignments for work, or anything else the boss might want to tell them.
I sometimes think how things would be different if these options were available when I was a kid. Working moms would have choices if we had only had the internet back then. Many working moms (and dads) could be at home, and possibly still earn enough money to support the family. When I was a teen, my dad worked in another city (even though he and my mom were still married). I often think about how nice it would have been to see him more often, whether we had an online family “meeting” or a simple video chat on one of the various services available. Gosh – how did people survive without the internet?
I am fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom (and have been for the past 13 years or so), but if I ever had to go back to work again, I would definitely want a telecommuting job. To be home with my kids has been one of the biggest pleasures of my life. Not only have we had quality time over the years, but I was here to keep an eye on them, and to make sure they stay out of trouble.
Have you had a telecommuting job before? What was the best part for you?
