- Since I am working with Colgate Total, the first thing on my list is take care of your oral health. I have always observed good oral hygiene practices (brushing three times a day, flossing, seeing a dentist for regular checkups and cleanings), but I never knew that good oral health is so important to a person’s overall health. I have learned that there are lots of medical conditions and diseases that are linked to poor dental health and/or periodontal problems, and taking care of your teeth and gums is an easy way to maintain your overall health.
- Make sure to receive regular doctor checkups and preventative screenings as recommended. I think that this is one of the most important things that women can do for their health. There are so many medical problems that can be caught and taken care of with regular and early screenings. As I mentioned above, good oral health leads to good overall health, so regular dental checkups and cleanings may help you make sure that you aren’t suffering from serious medical conditions or diseases, or if your dentist sees problems with your teeth or gums that may indicate other medical problem, you can be sure to follow up with your doctor and possibly prevent something serious. Other important checkups and screenings that women should regularly receive include reproductive health examinations, mammograms, blood pressure checks, cholesterol checks, and vision examinations.
- Eat healthier! You should be eating well-rounded meals and the recommended daily servings from each of the food groups. I love trying out new recipes, and there are so many out there that are easy and healthy (which is great for busy women). I also love this time of year with all the fresh fruit and vegetables in season. Eating healthier will help you maintain a healthy weight, and cutting out sugary unhealthy foods will keep your teeth clean and healthy to help with good oral health.
- Stay active and/or exercise on a regular basis. This is probably one of the hardest things for me to do as I do not have the time to go to the gym everyday, and even though I have an exercise machine at home, it is rare that I get a half hour to myself to use it (except for late at night when I’m exhausted or early in the morning when I can’t get myself up out of bed). You don’t have to follow a full-blown exercise routine or spend hours at the gym though. There are several ways that you can stay active and get your whole family involved too – go for a bike ride or a walk, throw a ball around outside, head to the nearest park or playground and chase your children around. Just do anything to stay active!
- Try to get eight hours of sleep every night. I know this may be easier said than done, but you really need to allow your body to rest and refresh after everything it gets put through in a day. One way that I can be sure to get enough sleep is to eliminate stress. Sometimes it takes me a half hour or more to fall asleep at night because I am busy thinking and worrying about stuff for work or things that need to be done at home. I find that reading a book before bed helps me to clear my mind and fall asleep easier, as well as putting the phone, tablet, computer, etc. away well before bedtime! Getting enough sleep each night can help you have more energy each day, which may make it easier to exercise or stay active or take the time to prepare a healthy meal.
- Break your unhealthy habits. If you are feeling stressed out, go for a walk to clear your head rather than reaching for a cigarette (again, stay active!). Take the time to make a healthy dinner at home rather than grabbing some fast food, or grab a piece of fruit instead of a candy bar or soda pop for a snack (again, eat healthier and take care of your teeth!). Always wear your seatbelt and don’t become distracted by texting or talking on the phone while driving. Even changing one little thing can lead to a world of difference for your health!
- Get the word out about women’s health. Talk to your friends and female family members about what you all can do to improve their health. Use social media to discuss important issues in women’s health (use the hashtags #NWHW and #ColgateTotal). You may also learn other ways that you can improve your own health!
