Navigating life before college can be tough. There are so many things that you can do as a parent to help your child to navigate this tough time, but you need to make sure that you’re also not overstepping. Remember that this is your child’s life, and it’s their opportunity to do what they want to do, but this doesn’t mean that you have to stand back and let them do it all on their own.
You need to find the right balance between helping and letting them work it out for themselves, but the best thing to do is just be there to support them when they need it, and do what they ask you to. In this article, we’re going to be looking at some of the things that you can do when it comes to navigating life before college, helping your child as best you can. If you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.

Applying For Colleges
The first thing that we’re going to talk about is applying for colleges. This process is long, and it’s tough, and your child is likely going to struggle at some point. You need to be there to support the hours that they are putting into doing this. They’re going to write and rewrite their personal statement so many times you won’t believe it. In fact, you should help them by supporting this, reading the statement over and over, giving them the feedback that they need, and so on.
Think about the colleges that they are applying for, and make sure that you are helping them to apply for financial aid and student loans if this is going to be necessary. We know that it’s hard to do, and we know that it’s hard for you if you can’t cover the whole cost, but it’s expensive so don’t get too down on yourself.
Touring Campuses
The next thing that we’re going to be looking at is touring campuses. You should go with your child to tour campuses if they want you to. This allows you to get a feel for each of the places, and see how they feel while they are there. As parents, it’s hard to let your kids go, even though it’s just a part of life, but sometimes seeing where they’re going to be, and how happy they look there, that is enough to help.
Make sure that you’re touring campuses across a wide range of colleges though. Encourage them to tour more than one, in fact as many as possible, just to get the best possible idea of where they want to go.
Looking Into Everything
Of course, when moving away to college there are so many things that need to be considered, one of which is student accommodation. Where is your child going to live for the duration of their college years? You’re going to need to apply to student housing, work out how much this is going to cost, and whether this is the right move. Some people prefer to live off campus, but it all depends on preference and money.
You’re also going to need to help them look into getting a job if this is needed, buying textbooks, and so much more. It’s a lot, and it’s overwhelming, and there is every chance that they are going to struggle, but that’s normal. You just have to be there to make sure that you can comfort them and help them through.
Handling Acceptance And Rejections
One of the hardest parts about applying to college is the part where your child starts receiving letters from the colleges. It’s hard because you never know what is coming. Sometimes a child can achieve so much and still not get into their top college, which can be disheartening.
You need to be there to help them through the acceptances and the rejections. Hopefully they won’t receive too many of the latter, as we don’t want you or them to have to go through that, but it happens. It’s okay though, remind them that if it wasn’t the right path, they wouldn’t be on it.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you can do to help your child navigate life before college. It’s tough, but you’ve either been there or know someone who has, and you can be their support throughout this time. Don’t give up, and don’t let them give up either.
