Make Money

Mornings can set the tone for everything that happens during the day. From school runs to coffee stains to finding out about that one lost shoe you were looking for, though, you need to remind yourself and your body that it needs a little TLC as well. My mornings once involved a mad dash, but secretly nestled within that are little health check-ins that don’t add to your time but really make a huge difference. You are going to need this at some point. While the kettle is getting hot, I take thirty seconds to stretch arms up and rotate shoulders. It wakes me up more gently than caffeine and reminds me where tension is arising within me. If there is soreness or stiffness, I don’t try to muscle through anymore; I simply register it and check later how I’m doing. That little break builds up a sense of habit about taking attention, even on busy days. In Front of the Mirror While I’m brushing my teeth, those two minutes are a little mini-scan for me. I look at my skin, eyes, and even at my posture. It sounds minor, but paying attention to the color under your eyes or if your jaw is strained can reveal more than you think. I’ve noticed that I grind my teeth at night by paying attention to morning soreness. Little details make daily routines meaningful checkpoints without taking up extra time. Listening to Legs and Feet Most mothers are on their feet during the day, and I have found that those first few minutes after getting dressed are a timely period to check for a feeling of heaviness, swelling or unusual soreness. If there is, I don’t ignore it. Staying alert here once saved me from symptoms of varicose veins at an early age, and seeing that allowed me to do something about it earlier. It is not about bringing anxiety to your day; it is about seeing little signs before they become something larger. Breathing Space in the Car School drop-offs used to feel like a blur, but now I use the quiet moment afterwards to take three slow breaths. It gives me space to notice my heart rate and how my body responds to stress. Some mornings it’s steady, other mornings it’s racing. Either way, acknowledging it helps me understand when I may need to step back later and reset. Converting Tasks Into Check-Ins Putting away laundry or wiping countertops is not a top-priority activity per se, but they are instances where I get to check in with myself regarding strength in the core and balance. Am I balanced perfectly? Do I feel lightheaded upon leaning forward? These are small reminders, but they are significant. By assigning mindfulness to domestic chores, never at all did I think that I needed to include separate time for self-care; I’m just doing it as part of what I’m doing. Why It Matters These small health checks are not about adding pressure to a busy schedule. They are soft reminders that your body is your ally, and listening to what it has to say is worth your time. If you heed small signs before they become larger problems, you are taking care of yourself to keep you strong for those who matter to you most.
