Teeth Fairies Help Children Lose Their Baby Teeth – Review

I think I was six years old when I lost my first baby tooth, and all I remember was that it was really scary – from the time that my tooth became loose, to the feeling of moving the tooth around with my tongue, to the anticipation of when it would actually fall out and how it would feel.  It didn’t help that my older brother and sister, in their never-ending quest to torture me, made me believe that losing a tooth was a horrible experience.  As it turns out, I survived it just fine, but I certainly didn’t feel like I would at the time!

I do not want my children to go through the same anxiety that I felt when faced with losing their baby teeth.  I was really excited to receive Teeth Fairies: A Baby Teeth Tradition, by Ingrid Bencosme, which includes a book and a plush fairy doll (plus a keepsake box) to help children understand and feel better about losing their baby teeth.

The head tooth fairy is so busy that she has tons of helper fairies (tooth fairies in training) to collect teeth from children.  The fairy doll is one of these helpers, specially chosen for your child, who can name the fairy.  My daughter chose the name “Princess Hera” for her fairy (because she thought her fairy had beautiful soft hair).  Princess Hera will come back when my daughter gets her first loose tooth, help her through the loss, and bring a special treat!  Princess Hera also gets to put the tooth in her crown and go from a tooth fairy in training to a full-fledged tooth fairy!  She will then come back for the next loose tooth!

The book is full of fun and colorful illustrations to go along with the story and includes places for you to put your child’s name and the name of his or her fairy.  There is even a chart in the back so you can keep track of every lost tooth and the special prizes received.  My daughter was also really excited to see her name on one of the tooth jars shown on the inside back cover!  Although my girls are a few years away from losing any of their teeth, I think Teeth Fairies is a great way to introduce them to the concept and make them understand that it is not a bad thing to lose their teeth, but rather an exciting part of growing up.

Another thing that I like about Teeth Fairies is that it can be used to teach my children about dental health in general, including the importance of brushing their teeth at least twice a day and going to the dentist on a regular basis.  Sometimes it is a struggle to get them to brush, and I would rather not deal with the tears that are inevitable when they go to the dentist.  Princess Hera will watch to make sure they are taking care of their teeth and report to the head tooth fairy every night.  My hope is that Teeth Fairies will get my girls excited about taking good care of their teeth so they can continue to have beautiful smiles!

  1. This is the cutest idea! I remember my dad pulling out my first tooth and I was so upset about it. lol This would be great for my grandson in a few years. 🙂

  2. What an awesome idea. I was so scared when I lost my first tooth. Petrified would be the right word. I think this is a great thing for children to have to help them cope with it.
