With little boys, it is no secret that dinosaurs are considered pretty cool in our house. Of course, as a parent, I definitely love the educational aspect that dinosaurs bring to the table. However, after watching countless dinosaur movies, I’ve noticed that the portrayal of these animals is almost always incorrect. Take the velociraptor for example. Just my mentioning of that probably put an image of a rather large, incredibly intelligent, quick, ferocious creature into your mind, right? Because of Hollywood’s version of this particular dinosaur, you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you that, in reality, the velociraptor was actually only about the size of a large turkey.
Having been about two feet tall and with a long feathered tail, the animal in its true form is just about as far from the Hollywood version as you can get. So, while dinosaur movies are certainly entertaining, the vast majority are not even remotely educational. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the films classified as educational are almost always guaranteed to lose a child’s interest shortly after beginning. That is until now.
Finally meshing the best of both worlds and bringing an adorably entertaining and (yes!) educational dinosaur film to the masses, I am happy to introduce to you… Walking with Dinosaurs The Movie.
In this movie, we follow along as a herd of dinosaurs make the journey on the path to safer grounds and, for one particular dinosaur, toward self-discovery.

Our little ones definitely enjoyed Walking with Dinosaurs The Movie, and I loved that periodically throughout the film, little tidbits of information were made available to the viewer. Each time a new character came into play, there was voice-over commentary and a pop-up informational box that briefly described each dinosaur to the viewer. This was a big hit with the kids and they began to get excited upon seeing it. They quickly picked up on the differences between things like “carnivore” and “herbivore” and would excitedly shout out phrases like “He eats meat, Mommy!” I was thrilled that, with this film, they weren’t only being entertained by the cute storyline but they were learning as well. Surely, this movie is a win-win for everyone!
