We are a family who depends on smartphones, and to say that our mobile phone bill is high would be an understatement. Lately we have been considering switching.
Walmart Family Mobile Review
I recently learned about a my family mobile plan that requires no contract!
Walmart Family Mobile would allow us to buy smartphones and pay the bill monthly. I think this is a fantastic idea, and one that is sure to save the average family money each month.
We would be able to do so many other things with the money we save with Walmart Family Mobile.
All locations may not offer every Walmart Family Mobile plan option and models. I was pleased to see that the iPhone is an option.
When you choose to take advantage of Walmart Family Mobile, you can either buy one of the available phones under the plan, or you also have the option of keeping and using the phone you already have. We switched all of our phones to Walmart Family Mobile.
In addition to the iPhone, there are some other really nice phones to choose from with Walmart Family Mobile. The phones range in price from $29.88 to $649.88.
The first two Walmart stores I went to didn’t have the phone I wanted in stock, but I did find it at the third store, thank goodness. I also picked up the starter kit (which is required to use Walmart Family Mobile plans).
Walmart Family Mobile Plans
The next step was to choose a plan. I decided on the unlimited talk, text and web for $39.88. The other option was the Talk & Text plan for $29.88. I filled out my name and billing address, chose to get a new phone number (you also have the option of keeping your old number), and I was all set. It was super easy and took me all of 5 minutes (after I had inserted the battery and SIM card in the phone).
When you choose a Walmart Family Mobile plan, you will not be tied into an annual contract, and there are no overages. You can mix and match plans to create the perfect plan for YOUR family.
You might choose unlimited talk & text, or Unlimited talk, text & Web – it is up to you. I love the idea of customizable and unlimited plans! I am having fun playing with my new myTouch phone, and am very impressed with all that is can do, especially since it was so inexpensive, and so far I am loving Walmart Family Mobile!
How To Get Started
If you are ready to save money on your family’s mobile phone bill, it is easy to get started:
- Choose a plan
- Choose a phone (or you can even use your own compatible device)
- Buy a Starter Kit (you will need a starter kit for each line you want to activate – this one-time fee costs $25 each)
- Pay at the register! You can choose to activate your plan in-store or online from the convenience of home (which I did).
In addition to the phone and starter kit, you may wish to purchase an Extras Pack which will allow you to play games, purchase ringtones, take advantage of long-distance calling and international roaming to select countries.
Another really nice thing about the plans is that there is no credit check required. A good friend of mine has terrible credit (through no fault of her own – long story), but when she wanted to get a smartphone, she had to wait, as all of the carriers she called wanted to check her credit. She has been using a pay as you go phone for the longest time, but is ready to upgrade to a smartphone.
Pay Family Mobile Bill
Paying your bill is super easy – it can be done online, by phone, in-store or by auto-pay from your credit/debit card or checking. When I signed up today, I wasn’t asked for credit card information, which was nice.
Instead, I will receive a text a few days before my bill is due (my first bill will be prorated), and I will receive another reminder text shortly before it is due. Yes – it’s as simple as that. If I need to check on my account balance, see when a bill is due, etc., I can log onto my online account and information to find everything I need. I am estimating that we will save about $40 per month by switching to Walmart Family Mobile.

I loved my MyTouch from TMobile when we had smartphones! I like that there is no contract. Smart!
I didn’t even know Wal-Mart had cell phone plans! Though these prices sound SO much more appealing than our current contracted bill. I may just have to look into this!
I’m going to share with my husband! He’s forever complaining about our bill/contract. I think he’s going to be very pleased.
Good idea! I think he will be pleased!
sounds great,,didn’t know they had a plan either,,this would be great for families
Not having a contract for a family plan sounds wonderful!
I had no idea they offered this service and when my contract is up – think I have found my new solution – thanks so much for a thorough review 🙂
My husband and I have this and it is wonderful. We cut our bill in have by using this plan! Our phones work even when others want in areas were service is usually spotty
We have always got our cell phones and plans from Walmart.
Haven’t heard of the Walmart Family Plan before but will have to check them out, especially if they have iPhone and no cell phone contracts. Cell phone contracts are a big pet peeve of mine that’s why I refuse to sign up for one. I have an HTC Windows 8 Smartphone through Verizon and pay on a month-to-month basic as I hate getting locked into contracts. Cost me a little bit more monthly but that’s okay for now.
I like that you can keep your current phone and phone number and still use the plan.
wow, love that you can keep your same # and also your own device if you want and of course the cheaper prices, hubby and I have prepaid now, but with our daughter wanting her own phone soon… this might be the way to go. ON a regular plan my smartphone was almost $100 a month just for me! (and not unlimited either!)
Great idea, love that you get to keep your current number.
This is great for families with tweens and teens!
My girlfriend’s contract is expiring. I so need to tell her about this 🙂
My friend has Walmart family mobile and she likes it. I have been considering changing when my contract phone is up.
I am not a happy camper after reading this. I don’t have a smart phone yet and if I upgrade on our current plan (which is a contract plan of course) I have to pay an additional $30 a month. I cannot wait until it is over and I will most definitely check this out!
I havent heard of this one before but I will surely check it out. It sounds great and I can get a second one added onto it. sounds easy to do
These are great plans – you can’t beat $40 for unlimited text and data, especially for teenagers and bloggers!
I just switched to a prepaid plan for myself and was looking for one for my parents (they only use the talk feature, not text or data) and this seems like a good one for them. It would definitely be much cheaper for them!!!
Both my son and daughter have their plans through Walmart and love it. My daughter just got hers about 3 months ago. Purchased an iphone 5 and loves everything about this, great coverage and saved her lots of money
Walmart is just around the corner in my neighborhood, I’ll check out their cell phoneplans, thanks for the information!
This sounds like such a good plan. Our plan is expiring after the first of the year. We really need to look into the Walmart options. We have 4 of us on our plan and it cost and arm and a leg. Thanks!
sounds cool! Might have to consider this sometime!
I loathe Walmart. I would rather pay twice as much somewhere else than willingly choose to buy anything from them.
You and me both!!!! If only these people knew what their in for!! I hate family mobile and will be switching carriers!!!! Im glad you posted this! Thanks
Walmart has some really great deals on phones and phone plans. When I upgrade my phone I’m definitely gonna check out the options Walmart has available to me. I could really appreciate the savings.
These are good prices. I also think they have a good selection of phones.
This looks like a great way to get a phone for a cheaper price
Not getting into contracts, with small print would be awesome. The Walmart Family Mobile sounds like something we need to look into.
I’ve seen this and Wal-mart and it looks like such a great deal; unfortunately T-mobile doesn’t have service where I’m at 🙁 But your review has made me sure that if they extend coverage to my home area I’ll definitely be switching over!
Great options! I have verizon, which is costing an arm and a leg. Ugh!
I knew about straight talk plans but I did not know they had these..Too bad since I just bought my son a straight talk phone and bought him unlimited minutes or I would have checked into this 🙁
This looks like a great deal and I also like that you can keep your #. Great selection of phones too!
Haven’t heard of the Walmart Family Plan before but will have to check them out. I like that that I can keep my phone.
I saw the special on tv; unlimited talk and text for just $30.00! What a great deal!
My son has a prepaid Boost Mobile phone, and I think this is a really good option for young teens.
I’m very impressed with the Walmart plans and have recently changed my service because the savings is significant and the service excellent.
I get straight talk from Walmart and have been really happy with it for the past 2 years. In a few years, my kids will be old enough to be on a plan – it looks like this one may be the one I use!
I love that there is no contract I am going to really consider this thanks for sharing this.
We dont have the walmart family mobile in my hometown, if we did then i would start going that route rather then pay the $80 mo i pay thru verizon
I didn’t know walmart offered a phone plan! Sounds like an affordable buy!
my hubby and i might have to think about doing this. we’re downgrading our expenses lately because of a pay decrease. then we’re not locked into a contract either – love that regardless!
Great post! I have been looking into walmart family mobile. My family could save so much money having service through them.
I love that you can keep your old number. I’ve had my own number for so long it would be hard to let it go! Giving up the contract however would be so easy and wonderful!
