Why Is It Essential To Care For Postpartum Mental Health

December 5, 2022 by Lyric Spencer Leave a Comment

Even before baby comes, it’s important to think about postpartum mental health. The condition of postpartum depression and anxiety stems from sudden neurological changes due to the experience of pregnancy.

Why Is It Essential To Care For Postpartum Mental Health

For Canadian moms, it is brought due to hormonal imbalance, a complicated birth, or a sudden shift in their lifestyle. No matter what the cause, these mothers can start to develop symptoms of depression and anxiety that last for months, and may become a long-term ailment if not treated on time. Some symptoms include emotional turbulence, mood swings, sleep disorders, not feeling the joy of motherhood, and the guilt of such a realization. To help new moms and their families in this journey, we have four reasons why they should pay extra attention to maternal health postpartum.

Reasons to care for postpartum mental health

  • It can show up undiagnosed for months

Depression and anxiety are known to be silent thieves of joy. Not only can they show up undetected, but also worsen the longer it is left undiagnosed. The reason why family members and nurses need to monitor a postpartum mother carefully is to track subtle changes in her mood which may be a symptom of building anxiety or depression. If left unchecked, it can lead to secondary ailments, which can drop the immunity of the new mom.

  • Physical discomfort and chronic pain

In instances where the mother has gone through a particularly traumatic birthing experience, this is a prevalent concern. C-sections, breach babies, and other complications may need surgeries that can leave moms stressed during the recovery phase. If mental health is not prioritized at such a phase, these scars may lead to chronic pain as a psychosomatic response. In such conditions, taking preventive medication such as cannabinoids can be a pivotal step to recovery. Try consuming the best pre rolls canada to ensure a pain-free recovery.

  • Blocks in mother-baby bonding

The first few days of motherhood post-delivery are essential for both the mom and newborn. This is the time when they can establish a bond. However, if the mom is distressed, she may not be able to spend quality time with her child, affecting the baby’s development. A lack of bonding can cause emotional distress to both the mother and child, interrupting feeding patterns and much more.

  • Neglect of health can be dangerous

As we all know, a common result of experiencing mental health lows leads to neglect of the self. Patients, especially postpartum moms who need additional care can falter in their post-operative recovery when they’re depressed. Not only can this look like a lack of grooming and interest in caring for their bodies, but also as sudden weight fluctuations.

Wrapping Up

There are several forms of treatments and tools available to help such moms, thanks to growing research on the subject. However, what helps the most is approaching this subject with the highest form of empathy. Since pregnancies and deliveries are one of the most challenging experiences, showing support to the mother during both stages is pivotal to her well-being. We hope that this blog helps you with new and actionable insights.
