Why Public Schools Suck! The Education Crisis Damaging Your Kids’ Future

Why Public Schools Suck

There’s an education crisis threatening your kids’ future. 7th graders can’t read, write, or spell these days. Are we even going to ask about their math skills? Here’s why public schools suck and what needs to be done about it.

Why Public Schools Suck

This teacher who claims to work in an affluent neighborhood, went on TikTok to expose that his 7th grade students were reading at a 4th grade level and had zero comprehension skills. Before anyone gets bent out of shape about, ‘only poor kids being dumb’, this is no longer just affecting underprivileged youth anymore.

Nobody wants to blame overworked and underpaid teachers but let’s face it, parents have always sent their kids to school to learn most of what they need to know. So how is it now that kids all over America are so far behind, yet still get a pass to the next grade? It’s because the curriculum has been changed from the top down! You need to be aware.

Some people blame technology for the dumbing down of kids in school because in the information age there is less of a need for memorizing facts and figures. “All of that can be Googled with a smart phone”, one of my son’s teachers told me.

Then, there’s also how wildly distracting all of these devices are while simultaneously shortening their attention span to that of a house fly.

Either way, you better get your kids because public school and possibly some private schools are ruining their future. People seem to regard Charter Schools favorably. I wouldn’t know because I currently homeschool since 2020. My kids are ages 15 and 5.

Is Technology To Blame?

public school sucks

To understand this shameful occurrence of sucky schools, we have to go back to the early 2000s, when parents first began complaining about all of the homework their kids were receiving. Slowly the students received less and less homework over the years until homework and school reports went completely extinct.

My son NEVER had homework and if he did, it was not checked, corrected, or graded by his teachers. Oh that was another thing Millennials didn’t want imposed on their kids…those pesky grades. So they got rid of that too.

How is anyone supposed to know what their child’s progress is?

Conspiracy Theory on Education and Poverty

If they don’t bring back good old fashioned teaching like I had when I was coming up, today’s students will be doomed to a life of poverty and low self worth, but some have theorized that this is exactly what big business owners want. Little education and increased poverty means increased work force at the business owner’s mercy.

No More Books!

Parents were also furious about all of the books their kids dragged back and forth to school citing the negative impact heavy book bags had on their kids’ posture.

That was the beginning of soft kids that give up on life and the end of resilient kids that don’t crumble under life’s pressures. Today the mentality seems to be, if the school is too hard, just make it easier.

Back when I was a New York City public school kid, we carried those heavy bags on our backs through rain, sleet, and blizzard conditions. I was strong, my siblings were strong. We wrestled aggressive stray dogs on the way to school and still made it there on time.

Kids used those enormous book bags to fight off kidnappers! Back then, you could throw your backpack at anyone trying to shove you into a white van and run the opposite way as they stumbled to the ground under the weight.

Then somewhere around 2002 you started seeing kids dragging a small suitcase with wheels, thereby saving their precious backs. It was a sad sight indeed.

No More Multiplication

So the teachers stopped giving homework and the kids stopped carrying books. This was fine with the teachers because hey, they didn’t want to spend their evenings grading homework when they could be turning up in the club.

Can’t say I’m mad at them, there’s just a stark contrast between my teachers and teachers of today.

I also just heard a story from a woman in my mom circle about how they are no longer teaching multiplication in grade school, however your child is “still expected to know it”, the teacher told her.

That’s what you call a Chinese riddle. How Sway? Unacceptable! Is there any wonder why the kids today are not performing at grade level when they are expected to know things they never learned in the previous grade.

No More Cursive Writing

This is a copy of the cover of the U.S. Constitution.

Cursive is also no longer being taught in school and this has been the case for some time now. Once I realized my oldest was not taught cursive I was floored!

Even the books I purchased for him had terrible technique. The letters were not slanted and none of them had the tail to connect the next letter on the front or back. I had to create the lessons by hand, and I learned how to write in cursive in the 3rd grade.

This is tragic because think about it, the original constitution is written in cursive, you must sign checks in cursive, and you sign contractual agreements in cursive! Adults must have a signature.

Why have the powers that be decided to take all of this education out of schools? One word, control, and we must take back control over our children’s core education.

Everything I needed to function in my career as a news writer and producer was learned in elementary school. I literally used the same skills I learned in the 3rd and 4th grade to write breaking news pieces for National and International news for major networks! Wild right? That’s what a decent elementary school education can do.

The skills that helped me write and produce were as follows: reading comprehension, basic math, note taking, being able to summarize a story, reading current events, being inquisitive, as well as having pride and confidence in myself.

Self-Esteem In School

I went to an excellent public school. I’m so proud to have been taught at P.S. 147 which became the Ronald McNair School, named after one of the Astronauts who was tragically killed in the Challenger explosion in 1986. I can tell you so many facts about Ronald McNair as well as a short rap about his life…if you ever have time.

At The Ronald McNair School, so much pride and confidence was instilled in us kids and it was made a daily part of our education.

We were taught many poems about having high self esteem and setting goals.

I was taught respect at the Ronald McNair School and had what I believe to be the most caring, intelligent, and compassionate teachers in New York City.

My teachers at P.S. 147 in Queens, New York from 1986 to 1990 were Mrs. Mason (1st and 2nd Grade), Mrs. Needleman (3rd grade), Ms. Leslie (4th Grade), Mr. Noriega (Social Studies), and Mr. Ilaw (5th Grade). Some of them have passed away, but I will never forget them.

We recited a poem written by the staff entitled, “I am Somebody”, almost daily. It was akin to a school motto. Some of the lyrics I still remember from the second grade are, “My mind is a pearl, I can do anything in this whole world, because I am somebody”.

At the end of the poem we had to shout “I am somebody” like we believed it. I do believe it to this day.

Crazy School Supplies Lists

Now, we can’t talk about how crappy public schools are now without touching on the ridiculous back to school lists that are complained about every single September.

Parents are asked to purchase exorbitant amounts of school supplies just so the teacher can take them from your kids and redistribute them to all of the students throughout the year.

The concept seems innocent enough because on the surface it makes sense to request more supplies to help compensate for other parents and even teachers who can’t afford supplies for the entire year.

Unfortunately, what it actually does is put a financial strain on everyone to come up with 20 packs of dry erase markers every year.

Violence In Schools

What about all of the violence in schools now? From school shootings to aggressive staff, sending your kids to public school can be a terrifying experience.

Nasty food puts me in a nasty mood!

So the kids are bad, the staff is bad, and the food is bad?

My kid refused to eat lunch at school. Before I pulled him out, I had to pack a lunch for him every morning.

When I was in school, hot lunch was THE highlight of my day.

school lunch sucks

Those round pizzas with the square pepperoni chunks slapped! My kid told me the pizza wasn’t even edible.

Something’s seriously wrong when a kid can’t even look forward to pizza day.

reasons to homeschool

Public Schools Are Glorified Daycare

I think it’s safe to say that public schools today are little more than a glorified daycare. There’s no learning going on in that place!

I met a fellow homeschool mom in the library and she had decided to pull her kids out of school because the teacher let them play Minecraft all day. ALL DAY! I

Since when did defeating the Ender Dragon become part of the 4th grade curriculum?

Too Frequent Testing

Oh and I almost forgot about the relentless testing they do. My son had 2-3 tests every week! And I’m not talking about a spelling test or the one where you ‘must show your work’. I’m talking about major 100 question exams that we used to take at the middle and end of the school year only.

The level of anxiety these tests caused us kids back in the day could make a kid barf. Now, they are being inflicted on students on a regular basis.

Now that we know why public schools suck, what are we doing about it? Are you going to carve out some time away from Netflix and chillin’ to show your child how to hold a freakin’ pencil before they hit Kindergarten? Or maybe you should just focus on teaching them their real names so that they don’t get confused when their pre-k teacher doesn’t call them BooBoo during roll call.

The Solution…

Homeschool and Public School Together

If you’re going to send your kids to school today, you have to be their primary educator. You don’t have to pull your kids out of school to homeschool them. You can work with them at home using apps and workbooks that anyone can find in stores and online.

My rant is not just a case for homeschool because I know it’s just not possible for everyone, but something must be done for our kids’ sake because the public schools suck!
