National Good Neighbor Day

You may remember a couple of months ago when I posted about White Pages Neighbors. Well, I have some fun news for you. Today (September 28th) is National Good Neighbor Day!

National Good Neighbor Day is definitely a good thing. Being a good neighbor is just a nice thing, and to me, it spells community. I remember back when I was a kid, we had a really tight group of neighbors – they each watched out for the other neighbors kids, and all of us kids felt safe. It seems only fitting that one day a year honors good neighbors.  Whether you make a meal for a neighbor, or offer to pick up their mail and newspapers while they are out of town, you can be a good neighbor too.  And remember – the nicer you are to your neighbors, the better your chances are of them reciprocating.

This day of recognition is not to be confused with other forms of “Good Neighbor Days”. Stores proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” to promote sales, a wide range of organizations announce “Good Neighbor Days” to promote their cause, and local municipalities and governments proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” for a variety of reasons.

Rather, this day is to truly recognize and appreciate your good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you!

  1. We only have one neighbor, an elderly lady. We try to be good neighbors by checking on her through visits and phone calls.

  2. We help our next door neighbor who is elderly with raking, shoveling and with small chores like shopping and fixing things.
    Thanks so much.

  7. I watch for packages that are left at my neighbors house, and since we always keep each other informed of our whereabouts, I contact her if I’m concerned about her health/safety. We’ve exchanged phone numbers, so we can stay in touch. I always watch to make sure suspicious persons are not on her property.

  8. I keep noise to a low and make sure my kids don’t mess with the neighbors’ things.

  9. I take time to get to know the people that live near me so they know who I am and I know they are! That way I might know if something is suspicious or vice versa

    demureprincess7(at)gmail(dot)com

  10. We live in a townhouse and share walls so I’m careful about how much noise we (and especially the kids) make. Thank you for the giveaway!

  11. Though I work nights when I am home I stay on the same sleep schedule so I keep quiet so I don’t wake my neighbors

  12. A good neighbor – sometimes my neighbor needs someone to watch her kids & I’ll go that.
Her kids are so much fun!
    Thank you.

  13. We are thankfully close with all of our neighbors (except one) – we’re good neighbors by helping each other out whenever needed with anything that’s needed. What we really do to be good neighbors is cut our neighbor’s lawn for her, even though she is not a nice person at all, doesn’t appreciate it and doesn’t reciprocate, we still do it. All the others make it easy to be a good neighbor. sammiejanL40 at aol dot com

  14. To be a good neighbor, we try not to be loud (currently in a townhome), don’t park out front (blocks mailboxes) and we’re always being chatty and helping their kids with fundraisers. We’re moving soon and won’t have any neighbors, kind of happy and sad about that!

  15. I’m a good neighbor by sharing stuff from the garden

  16. When we first moved here, all of our neighbors were very elderly. We gave them our phone numbers and talked to them frequently. Whenever they needed anything, they knew they could call us.
    twoofakind12@yahoo.com

  17. I watch my neighbors house when they area away. I check on the home and take the mail and papers in.

  18. we all keep an eye on each others properties when we know the neighbors are not home, as we’ve had a rash of burglaries in the outside area around our houses. By being vigilant and aware of each others schedules, it helps keep the neighborhood safe.

  19. I know a lot of my neighbors and I know a lot of their pets. I always speak, wave, pet…whatever kind of interaction is appropriate. I take an interest in them and their families.

  20. We try to keep our property looking nice, so as not ti reflect a bad image on the neighborhood. We roll our garbage and recycling to and from the street at times when most would not be sleeping, as that process can be noisy. We’re here if someone needs help, and they are there for us.

  21. I take care of my neighbours’ places while they’re away, watering the plants and picking up the paper.

  22. Sadly, I don’t know many of my neighbors. I try to be a good neighbor by keeping my yard looking neat, and respecting the noise in the neighborhood.

  23. My husband mows our neighbors yard. She’s single and has a lung condition so she can’t do it very easily on her own. momlovesdeals at gmail dot com

  24. It was a hard transition from me from living in a rural community to living in the burbs of a major city–I am the “creepy person” that waves to everyone in the neighborhood. I haven’t given up waving to everyone in the almost 9 years we’ve lived here! I think it makes the place a bit more cheery. 🙂

But, I’m happy to say we have a very nice, neighborly lady that lives next door to us. My husband and I watch over her house when she goes out of town, I bring her baked goods when I make them, and just try to help out when we can. She does the same for us.

    Thanks!

  25. Right now I’m helping a neighbor who is going thru a horrible time by providing a safe place for her horses. I also share my garden goodies, and help out anyway I can when neighbors need help.

  26. I take the neighbor kids to school when the parents can’t (my son graduated 10 years ago and these kids are in elementary school).

    lkish77123 at gmail dot com

  27. I feel like I’m not as good a neighbor as I could be. Our neighbors are all a generation older than we are, so they try to take care of us – they’ve taught us about how to best shovel our driveway, helped with our garden, etc. We take goodies at Christmas, but apart from that I’m generally at a loss.

  28. We try to be quiet and respectful so our neighbors don’t have to put up with loud noises 🙂 And we take turn taking the trash out/in.

    unforgetable_dreamer_always (at) hotmail (dot) com

  29. We all watch out for each other on our street. We watch each other’s children when they are playing outside. We watch each other’s homes while away on vacation.

  30. I pick up the trash off of the ground while I walk each night – keeps the neighborhood beautiful

  31. I clean up the neighborhood school bus stop for all the neighborhood kids every day (picking up trash, washing off the dog urine).

  32. I help my neighbors out when they need it and talk to them. My husband has even helped some of them with their cars

  33. Tolerance, respect, communication. Everything I do to be a good neighbor I learned in Kindergarten. Since then it is just practice and learning new words to describe the behavior.

  34. I’m a good neighbor by watching out for suspicious behaviour at their houses. And, getting the mail when they’re out of town.
    jtmagmom73(at)gmail(dot)com

  35. We help out our physical neighbors as we’re able, but our biggest contribution is likely that we support our local food pantry pretty strongly. Even our daughter helps – her birthday party requests are for food for the food pantry rather than toys and other presents.

  36. My next door neighbor is elderly. I take her recycling bin and garbage can to the curb each week, and bring them back. I help her with some household chores. I have helped her change bandages when she fell and cut her arm. I go over and talk to her on regular occasions.

  37. I MAKE SURE MY NEIGHBOR CAN GET A CLEAR VIEW OF THE BIRD-FEEDER, IN CASE THEY LIKE SEEING THE BIRDS, LIKE WE DO!

  38. We participate in neighborhood watch. We also take care of things when our neighbors are away.

    alsatia23 at hotmail dot com

  39. When i was sick with cancer, my neighbors volunteered to take me to my treatments. My husband helps by picking their mail when they go on vacation or helping them cleaning their sidewalk from papers and other things.
    GloriaDeal@aol.com

  40. I collect mail, water palnts, pet sit, and mow grass while my neighbors are on vacation, have the neighbors over for vacations, and more.

  41. Well, in the last month, we, as well as 2 of our neighbors have had flooding in our basement 3 times. We’ve all been helping each other out with this.
    sweetpeonies07 at gmail

  42. I always try to look out for my neighobors and help as I can, so i think that makes me a good neighbor

  43. My husband and I are good neighbors because we share whatever we have like our ladders, lawn mower, etc. with the young newlyweds next door.

  44. I leave my neighbor alone that is how I am good to them…lol no, I help keep their walkway cleared

    pattifritz2000 at yahoo dot com
    thanks for the chance

  45. I try to be a good neighbor by helping anyone who needs it and watching out for suspicious people during the day since I have been working from home.

  46. Just being respectful in general like keeping the noise down and keeping up the front lawn. I try to say hi and make small conversation when I see any of the neighbors outside.

  47. We live in an area where there are nice homes, but it’s near a major thoroughfare. There are somewhat frequent incidents of strangers creeping around private properties, breaking into vehicles, and sometimes worse. When we have any idea that somebody might be lurking in the dark (we have a large vigilant dog who alerts us to any ‘creepers’), we call the neighbors to either side of us, sometimes even in the middle of the night, if we feel it’s necessary. They do the same for us, too. It definitely makes me feel safer to know we’re all looking out for each other!

  49. We have recycling/trash dumpsters in the alley behind our houses. I can sweep up any broken glass that occurs when the dumpsters are emptied. This broken glass really bothers my next door neighbors whose garage is directly opposite the dumpsters.

  50. I watch over my neighbor’s house, offer help and support, and live a peace with them

  51. I feed sugar cubes to my neighbor’s horses. He’s an awesome neighbor to us. He takes our trash to the road if we don’t get it done and he pushed up dirt along the edges of our fence trying to keep our dogs from running away.

  52. What do I do to be a good neighbor? I help my neighbor Tina bring in her groceries, and I also bake her cupcakes once a week. We enjoy them together!! Sometimes I help her cook dinner for her kids, and I invite her and her children over for a movie day once a month!! I help her pretty much everyday. I look after her dogs, when she goes on vacation!! Also I babysit her kids when she wants to get away from it all, me and her kids bake cannoli’s as a coming home present! Over all shes a awesome neighbor to me and she says, I’m a great neighbor to her!! Great website, I read it like everyday.

  53. I chat with my neighbors, my husband helps them shovel snow, we invite them for holidays if they are alone 🙂

    Thanks for the chance!

  54. To be good neighbors, we help out around us outside, and with watching during quiet-break-ins-possible times, sometimes share goodies, and by just being friendly, easy to get along with folks! 🙂 creedamy [at] yahoo [dot] com

  55. Since I live in the country, with few close neighbors, and there has been a major problem with grass fires this year, one of the most neighborly things I can do is not have any outdoor fires (including grills!) and watching for any sign of fire in the neighborhood.

  56. all us guys in the neighborhood helped the lady on the corner get rid of a tree that fell down in a recent storm

  57. I try to be a good neighbor by helping out with odd jobs like painting, raking leaves, and shoveling snow on the common walk, and by volunteering for community fundraising and cultural events. Thanks!

    gkaufmanss at yahoo dot com

  58. As a good neighbor I keep an eye out for strangers who look like they’re up to something.

  59. Over the years I’ve babysat my neighbor’s cats while he was on vacation. I often help another neighbor with her grocery bags.

  60. We keep the noise down and help neighbors whenever they need a hand.
    monorox(at)gmail(dot)com

  61. I watch my neighbors’ homes when they’re away and bring in their mail. Also share recipes and books. Take them treats when I make something delicious.

  62. We help to pet sit and pick up newspapers for our neighbors. We also try to help water plants and pick up mail. We try to help out like we would like to be helped out!

  63. Our neighbors actually just moved (booo!) but they are still trying to sell their house, so when my husband mows our lawn, he mows theirs as well.

  64. I live in a college town so I try to be a good neighbor by not blasting music or holding crazy parties.

  65. I don’t have a ton of extra time and I also babysit so the best I can do to be a good neighbor is keeping the daycare kids’ noise to a minimum and making sure they stay in our yard. I also take food to a neighbor that is going through a divorce every night.

    boylaneely at hotmail dot com

  66. We are friends with a bunch of our neighbors. We routinely mow some of their lawns when we mow our own.

  67. We live in a large apartment building and we look out for the elderly neighbors. We baked cookies and handed them out during the hurricane!

  69. One of my neighbors has 3 small sons. She works and goes to school. I keep all 3 occasionally and the one that is my own son’s age I have almost every day from 4pm to 7pm.

  70. I show extreme patience when they are loud, pick up trash that some leave laying around, keep a watch out for strangers.

  71. My youngest daughter get the paper for our neighbors every morning so that they dont have to walk off the porch. My hubby always helps them with any heavy objects they need moved or carried. thank you!

  72. I’m a good neighbor by stopping and talking to my neighbors when I see them, and offering to help when I see a need.

  73. Thanks for the giveaway…we share produce from our garden with all our neighbors !

  76. My downstairs neighbor’s husband is currently stationed in Afghanistan so she’s all alone with no family nearby. I take her meals a couple of times a week and my husband helps her out with various “heavy” tasks as well as helping keep her old car running. She’s really a nice person and also helps us out if/when the need arises.

  77. I don’t have close neighbors where I live now but when I lived in the city we had great neighbors and would help each other out all the time with around the house projects that needed to be done.

  78. I am a good neighbor, being careful to be quiet and respectful. I helped one older woman who had fallen on the gravel and got employees to come help get her up.

  79. I get trash cans and lids out of the roadway, deliver mail that’s accidentally in my box and don’t make loud, loud, loud music sounds to trash the air around my neighbors. I’m awesome.
