I consider myself somewhat of an expert on pregnancy. I am a woman and I have been through two full-term pregnancies myself. But there were things that happened during my pregnancies that I never expected, and I am sure there are things that other women experienced that I did not have to deal with (and vice versa).
I just had the chance to read “
40 Shocking Facts for 40 Weeks of Pregnancy” by Joshua Best, based on his experience as a dad of two children. He wanted to pass on what he learned during his wife’s pregnancies – the stuff that no one tells you about and that you don’t find out until you are actually going through it. As he says in the Introduction, “This is a book for people who don’t want to be caught unaware like I was.” And with forty facts, you can read about a different one each week of pregnancy!
I received
Volume 1: Disturbing Details about Childbearing & Birth. This volume contains the first twenty shocking facts relating to pregnancy and childbirth. These facts do not deal with those things that everyone knows about or expects with a pregnancy (like morning sickness or weight gain), but those things that you would never even consider or think could happen, until it does happen and you think “what was that???” or “why wasn’t I ever told about this???”
I loved this book. I recalled a lot from my own pregnancies, so the information was not exactly new to me, but I enjoyed reading it all the same. Joshua Best has a way with words that had me laughing out loud at parts or cringing at other parts that were pretty graphic (pregnancy and childbirth can be hard and it is not always a delicate or gentle subject!). The pictures in the book were great and provided a little laugh as well. I read other books during my pregnancies, including ones written by doctors and ones written to be more humorous. I also tried, without success, to get my husband to read some books. However, I think he would enjoy “40 Shocking Facts for 40 Weeks of Pregnancy” as much as I did, especially since it is written by a man. It was a fairly quick read (less than 100 pages), so the information is not extensive, but it’s enough to be educational and entertaining. I would love to read Volume 2 when it is available!
You can buy “40 Shocking Facts for 40 Weeks of Pregnancy, Volume 1: Disturbing Details about Childbearing & Birth” online directly through

would love to read this!
I was surprised at how bad my feet and legs swelled when I was pregnant with twins.
My pregnancy was so long ago, I have forgotten more than I remember. This sounds like a fun book to read. I could give it to my son before they have their first baby.
I was shocked to know it really takes nine months.
Sounds quite interesting!
How crazy it feels when the baby kicks!
I was shocked to learn that one good kick from inside can cause you to pee your pants. I was so embarrassed.
I did not realize that it was a full40weeks. Thank you
