Alright, let me see a show of hands for who here likes “chick flicks.” Male or female, you know that you’re a sucker for them – at least from time to time. Now, who here knows who Jana Kramer is? I’ve personally been a fan of hers for quite some time now. For those of you that haven’t heard of her, let me clue you in a little bit:
After a number of acting roles including appearances on All My Children, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Entourage, she found a career defining, reprising role on One Tree Hill. Not too long after that, she took the leap into country music and has steadily climbed her way to the top, even landing the Academy of Country Music’s award for Best New Female Vocalist of the Year. After a busy summer concert tour with Blake Shelton and Easton Corbin, she is still proud to be getting back to her acting days. When I heard that Jana was appearing in a film, I was definitely excited. When I was told that it was her leading role debut, well, I had to see it! As a fan of hers, an avid listener of country music and, of course, fond of your good ol’ chick flick, her new venture was right up my alley.
A modern re-telling of “The Prodigal” story, in the form of “Wall Street” meets “Sweet Home Alabama” meets Nicholas Sparks.
Heart of the Country is an adorably sweet story based on the novel by Rene Gutteridge and John Ward. In the film, Faith (Kramer) is a beautiful singer – quite fitting, eh? – who is forced to return home when her seemingly perfect life with businessman Luke (Randy Wayne) is shattered.
After turning her back on her family to chase dreams of stardom in the big city, her new life of luxury is turned upside-down when her husband is jailed for fraud. To, now, escape the chaos that surrounds her life in New York, she returns to North Carolina and the family she left behind. This film puts a twist on the age-old story of the “prodigal son” when the prodigal daughter comes home to hide from the hurt of her marriage after her life is thrown into shambles.
The film takes you on a journey with Faith (Kramer) as she makes amends with her family and finds the strength to love again. Through the importance of family and with the help of her sister and father (Gerald McRaney), she finds – and becomes – the Heart of the Country when she learns that, sometimes, in order to go forward, you have to go back.

Jana does an amazing job in her first leading role and I expected nothing less of her. With such an incredible array of work under her belt, it was no surprise that she would shine as a leading lady. I recently had the chance opportunity to meet Jana at one of her recent shows where she was the opening act on Blake Shelton’s Ten Times Crazier concert tour. After first being a fan of her on the small screen and then on the radio, I am happy to say that I continue my support of her ever blossoming career.
This film, Heart of the Country, is definitely one for the record books. Regardless of whether or not you’re familiar with the novel, you will love this film. The story is timeless and Miss Kramer plays the role beautifully and effortlessly.
