Since BlogHer is in my neck of the woods this year {or this coast, or whatever}, I thought I would write a post for those of you coming to California in August for BlogHer 11. For me, New York and the East Coast were a bit of a culture shock. Before I went to BlogHer in NYC, I spent a couple of days near Boston, with my friend Andrea and her wonderful family. It was absolutely gorgeous – the drive to her house was breathtaking, and the scenery so lush and green. She took me to an outdoor shopping center in Boston and we had a blast. We had a yummy seafood dinner too, which made me happy. There was some debate about which coast has better seafood. I’ll let you decide 🙂
She and I and a couple other friends all drove to New York City together and that in itself was an experience. I have seen the hustle and bustle of San Francisco before, but it is really nothing like New York City. My sister-in-law says that New York City is San Francisco on steroids. I think that is a good way to put it. The cabs, noise and oodles of pedestrians was something else. One thing I noticed is that on the East Coast, people just dash into the street. Busy streets. I cringed each time I saw this happen. If they did that here in California, they would be hit by a car for sure. When you are here – please pay attention to the crosswalks and lights and don’t dart into the street assuming people will stop!
In light of my observations of the differences on the East and West Coasts, I thought it might be a good idea to give you an idea of what you can expect when you visit California.

Things you must try while you are in California:
Sourdough bread – I am not sure how familiar you are with it, or if it is available where you live, but it is served in almost all restaurants and it is fabulous!
See’s Candies – If I’m not mistaken, See’s is only available in the Western states. Their chocolate is some of the best you will ever eat. If you see a See’s Candies while you are out and about, please do stop in. You can’t miss them – the black and white storefronts are easy to spot.
The Beach – there are plenty in San Diego! Of course you will see water everywhere, but you most definitely want to dip your toes in the sand at a beach, or maybe even swim in the ocean!
Things that might be different in California:
Smoking – if you are a smoker, California isn’t as lenient as other states. Smoking is not allowed in restaurants or bars anymore, or any other indoor areas for that matter. This is a good thing, it just might not be what you are used to 🙂
Driving – if you are going to be renting a car, you should be fine. Just don’t go overboard on the honking, mkay? We don’t do that much.
Walking – as mentioned above, wait for lights and signals before crossing the street. Unless you like getting smooshed by cars, of course.
What to bring to California in August:
It is going to be hot here in August, so I would suggest the following:
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Sleeveless or short-sleeved blouses
Capris, skirts and/or shorts
Low-heeled, comfortable sandals or shoes- you will be doing a lot of walking
Flip Flops to wear to the pool, or just for a quick walk (or if your feet get sore – trust me, they will)
Lightweight jacket or sweaters. You probably won’t need them, but just in case.
Old Flip flops if you plan on going to the beach
Do not bring: heavy sweaters, or jackets. You probably won’t need them 🙂
Lastly – contrary to popular belief, everyone in California is not skinny, tanned, or perfect. People are super friendly and courteous here, so just be yourself and have fun!

I’m so jealous of those getting to go to Cali and BlogHer 11′! Being fortunate enough to go to New York last year, I was so incredibly spoiled with everything BlogHer had to offer 🙂
For those of you planning on going, have fun double for me! LOL
Oh Kayla…I sure wish you were going. You are someone I would absolutely love to meet (and give a great big hug to) 🙁 Maybe next year? Or at another conference?
I sure hope so! 🙂 I’ve been trying to win the trip again like last year, but no such luck{yet!}. LOL
Thanks for the stumble K!
My husband is from SoCal, so I looked up See’s a few years ago. And there’s actually stores outside of the west coast (he totally argued with me until we went to one in Tennessee). But I think I’ll have to bring some home. I’m sure he’ll tell me it tastes better from California. lol
LOL of course it will! Just make sure it doesn’t melt on the way home!
