A lot of healthy foods claim to taste like things that are decidedly decadent and unhealthy. I’m sorry, but no matter what you tell me, yogurt will never be a suitable substitute for strawberry cheesecake or lemon meringue pie. Never! When given the opportunity to try HALO bars, I was excited, but I remained skeptical. Could all-natural, 150 calorie vegan snack bars really taste like S’Mores or Rocky Road? Doubtful, right?

Wrong! For this review, I was able to try all four flavors of HALO Bars–S’Mores, Nutty Marshmallow, Rocky Road, and Honey Graham. While you definitely wouldn’t mistake any of these bars for the real thing based on texture, the taste comes pretty darn close. The S’Mores bar was my personal favorite–it has that wonderful, distinctive marshmallow aroma and just enough chocolate to make things interesting. Nutty Marshmallow–well, the name says it all, right? It was nutty, marshmallow-y perfection. Most marshmallows are not vegan and I have to say, ProBar has done a fantastic job making a veggie version. The Honey Graham bar tasted a little more virtuous than the others and reminded me of my favorite childhood graham crackers snacks. Rocky Road was chocolatey without being too rich–the perfect remedy for those nagging afternoon chocolate cravings.

At 150 calories, these bars are perfect to pack in your purse for those inevitable on-the-go snacks we all find ourselves indulging in. No more excuses for stopping at the drive through or at the local froyo shop! (Unfortunately, I’ve been making many stops at my local froyo shop lately–that cliche about food going straight to your thighs? For me, it’s true.)

HALO bars are from the makers of ProBar, a company that understands the importance of eating a plant-based diet of real foods. Unlike many nutrition, snack, and meal substitute bars, HALO bars are made with organic, wholesome ingredients. No weird stabilizers or additives here and nary an unpronounceable laundry list of chemical food substitutes either–nope, HALO bars are made with exotic ingredients like oats, peanut butter, whole wheat flour, and molasses. It’s these simple, natural ingredients that make Halo bars taste so yummy. In this world of Frankenfoods and faux everything, isn’t it good to know that there’s a company so committed to producing real food? I mean, we’re real people, right? Shouldn’t we eat real food? (The answer to that is: YES!)

Find HALO products at a store near you using the store locator on theprobar.com or order from ProBar’s online store. “Like” ProBar on Facebook and take the What’s Your HALO Quiz to find out which HALO flavor suits you best. Naturally, I’m a Nutty Marshmallow–no, not because I’m nutty, but because I’m a wild child rebel with a clever wit and sharp tongue. HALO bar, you totally have my number.

  1. YUM! I’m totally going to look for these the next time I go grocery shopping! I am forever wanting a sweet treat after dinner or in the afternoon, and these would be perfect. 🙂

  2. I so need a new snack to get me back on track. These sound really good Jennifer. cant stand the fake taste of some “healthy” snacks. yeah, exotic ingredients for sure. It surprises me how so many others have so much junk and preservatives in them. Will give them a try! thanks!
