Brother P-touch 1290 Labeler Review

Cleaning and organization go hand-in-hand, so it’s easy to see why spring cleaning often leads to spring organizing too. It’s hard to maintain a clean household if it’s not well-organized. But when everything has its place? Cleaning is a breeze!

Although I’m an organization freak, I’ve never upgraded my trusty little manual label maker (yes, the kind that punches each letter onto plastic tape–I am old, guys) to the electronic kind. You can imagine my excitement when I was offered the opportunity to try a Brother P-touch 1290 Labeler. It’s like trading in a Yugo for a Cadillac right? Sign me up!

So why is the P-touch so awesome? Well, I’m glad you asked! Here are some of its features:

• 15 Deco Mode Patterns to create extra-stylish and decorative labels
• 2 Professional Fonts
• Prints labels up to 12mm wide on laminated indoor/outdoor “TZ” series tapes
• Easy-view, 15-character LCD display
• Professional Deco Mode layouts accommodate two rows of text
• Prints 1 or 2 lines of crisp text
• 6 Auto Formats and 7 Framing Options
• Built-in memory, saves up to 9 of your favorite labels
• Automatically adjusts text size based on tape width
• Uses 6 “AAA” batteries or optional AC adapter (neither included)

And, I have to add, the P-touch is much faster than my Stone Age era manual label maker. It’s also neater looking than handwritten labels, so it’s perfect not just for home, but for the office as well. Once I got my P-touch in the mail, I went on a labeling rampage. Everything! Must! Be! Labeled! Here are some of the ways I used my P-touch for spring organizing:

I work from home and I have a lot of paperwork and documentation here. I replaced the ratty old tabs in one of my work manuals with tabs I made with the P-touch–I only removed part of the backing on the label tape and stuck that part to the page.

Do you keep canisters of flour, sugar, and other staples in the kitchen? I do and while I know what all of them are, my husband sometimes doesn’t. Solution? Labels under the lid!

I have a lot of craft supplies in big plastic tubs. The only way I knew what was in them was to open them up and peak inside. Now I have them all labeled so I can get exactly what I want right away.

When we moved to our current apartment, we had a lack of drawers and cabinet space. To compensate, we bought a few sets of plastic drawers. Like the plastic tubs, it’s hard to know what’s in them all unless you open them or have a photographic memory. I used my P-touch labeler to label each drawer–wow, why didn’t I think of this before?!

We are about to embark on a cross-country move, so packing has been a daily occurrence around here. I am loving using the P-touch to make detailed labels for our boxes. I used them to inventory bags full of clothes too.

Can you see how much I love this thing?

If you can’t wait to get your hands on a P-touch 1290 Simply Stylish labeler (ARV $39.99), you can find them at most Staples, Office Max, and Best Buy locations–to locate a retailer near you, go to the store locator (www.brother-usa.com/wheretobuy/) on the Brother International website. The Brother PT1290 Home and Office Labeler is also available at Amazon.com for only $25.98!

  1. They sure have come a long way.. I remember having one with a big dial that I had to turn for each letter.
    Thank you for the review.

  2. How neat is that thing!?!?
I’ve never gotten into the whole labeler craze, but that doesn’t mean I’m not open to it!
