With the holidays quickly approaching, the requests for online donations are showing up everywhere. Although they are usually for a good cause, and it is good to help when you can, there are precautions that need to be taken. LifeLock is here to help!
Although I have never had problems with donating (mostly because I rarely do it online), it is important to always be on guard, instead of not thinking about online safety until after your identity has been compromised.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Make sure when you are donating online (or buying anything online) that the address begins with https:// – this tells you that it is a safe site.
- Try not to order/donate online when you are in a public place. It is too easy for criminals to look over your shoulder to get your private information. Or if you are doing transactions over the phone, they may be listening for your information (even if you think you are speaking quietly).
- It is generally safer to research an organization before you donate. Sometimes it is tempting to donate outside of a store, but unless you are certain what this organization is all about, think twice.
- Paypal is a great service to use when donating online, as they offer an extra layer of security!
I mentioned in my last post about the LifeLock for Life Sweepstakes – well this month the questions are geared around safely donating online. Don’t forget to enter the sweepstakes, and if you check out tips from LifeLock, you’ll have the answers you need!
Make sure you follow LifeLock on Twitter and like LifeLock on Facebook – they post tips daily, and there are always so many things I had never even thought of before. LifeLock is pretty amazing 🙂
