My kids and I have always loved building blocks. It’s one of the best ways for me to bond with them because they’re toys that we can all enjoy and play with together. Building blocks are cool enough but the minute I heard that there were going to be ones that light up, I waited impatiently for them to go on the market officially. The wait was agonizing and I was constantly looking it up to see if they had come out yet. I’m happy to announce that they’re finally here and we ADORE them!
E-Blox are STEM-focused building blocks with which children can create circuits that will make lights and sounds. Block by block, they make anything they imagine and if they’ve connected the pieces correctly, the magic happens. There are a variety of different E-Blox sets, like the Story Blox, which incorporate the building along the way into different interactive stories. We received the Power Blox Advanced Set which contained over 100 pieces and 15 LEDs, allowing the kids to create all kinds of cool little light up structures.
The way that these blocks work is: You attach a 9V battery and you have a power block which you’ll layer the LEDs with. Just like with building any circuit, you have to properly match your negatives and positives. That in itself is a fantastic piece of education! We learned all about circuits in sixth grade and while it was a nice lesson I still remember, I’m 100% positive that this would have been so much cooler. I could absolutely see these being used in the classroom.
E-Blox are recommended for ages 8 and up, although all of my kids were enjoying them if I guided them through how to properly create the circuit. There is a bit of a learning curve to start with and I did short out one of the LEDs but luckily, there is a safety within the blocks. If you’re overloading the circuit, usually they will make a beeping sound to let you know you’ve done it wrong. The kids won’t get hurt, nothing will catch fire or anything crazy like that. There are no wires getting in the way either.
What we loved is the fact that we could make anything we wanted light up. I mostly stuck to buildings but the kids tried to do robots and different creatures too. The LEDs come in blue, red, and green, blinking, and alternating. My favorites are the ones that gradually turn from one color to the next. The kids just mixed every color with no rhyme or reason but hey, at least they were enjoying themselves. The plastic container E-Blox comes with is absolutely perfect for organizing your different size and color blocks, not that my kids will keep it that way! Ha!
Truthfully, I don’t need to tell you how fun E-Blox are because when I shared a preview of these awesome electric blocks on my Facebook page once, the comments came flooding to ask where they can be bought. You want them, your kids want them, and you really didn’t need my experience to tell you that! They’re fun, totally educational, and so pretty! I’d say E-Blox are among the coolest toys Santa could get the kids this year!
