This summer has been an extremely hectic one for us thus far but finding and making time to do things as a family is important. Amid the chaos of the ins and outs of life, we’ve certainly had our fair share of fulfilling family outings. We’ve gone on beach trips, spent a few afternoons at baseball games, went fishing and out for leisurely boat rides, and even kicked back on the couch from time to time for movie and game nights. Although the activities would change from day to day, there were a few things that remained constant – great fun, delicious snacks, and the love of family.
Over the course of the summer, I also shared those things with you in the form of two amazing companies. Frito-Lay and Activision have played a big part in our own summer adventures.
Between starting off our summer by voting for our favorite new Activision Skylanders® character and enjoying tasty treats from Frito-Lay in our home and on the go, our summer was made a little greater this year. Speaking of summer adventures, we set out on our own journey this morning. While we had initially planned to make a trip to the beach, unfortunately, the weather wasn’t so cooperative. It looks like we’ll have to put our Skylanders® beach goodies to use another day. For now, however, we decided to make the most of our day in between those pesky rain clouds. We gathered our gear and packed our bags.
Where were we off to? The park! After all, who doesn’t love a great picnic lunch with special guests, fun goodies, and delicious treats? I know that we sure do! And I’m fairly certain that the boys’ coveted new Fire Bone Hot Dog figure would agree.
Not only were we able to bring along some of our favorite Skylanders® friends but, with lunchtime quickly getting nearer I had to make sure that my kids had a well-balanced meal all prepared. In addition to the usual PB&J picnic sandwiches (and one request for peanut butter and banana), I tossed in a few fruit options into their meal. Of course, I was also sure to include some of their favorite snacks as well – Frito-Lay!
As I’m sure you well know, parenthood is a give and take.
Kids want to be able to kick back and play video games and that’s okay. Yes, really, it is okay. You just need to balance it all out. And that is what I love about Skylanders®. It is so much more than just a game. Sure, my boys enjoy a good night a home plopped on the couch journeying into the virtual world of Skylands on the television screen but they also enjoy the great outdoors.
For that, all of their favorite Skylanders® characters can tag along. And that, well, that is exactly what we did today. Our own Skylanders® character figures played around outside at the local park with the kids. Sings, slides, running, and simply enjoying life, they did it all. And, together, we enjoyed a delicious lunch.
That, of course, brings me back to good ol’ Frito-Lay. Much like video games versus active play, snacking is also a give and take. I’ve yet to meet anyone that doesn’t have a sweet (or salty!) spot for at least one of the great Frito-Lay products. Personally, I am a sucker for Cheetos snacks and the coinciding cheesy fingers. And the kids agree with me! We all have our favorites and that, too, is a-okay. We can enjoy everything in moderation and tossing a small bag into each of our lunches was the perfect addition to our on-the-go picnic lunch.
Shortly after our picnic time, the clouds broke for more rain and we had to cut our adventure short. Needless to say, the kids were bummed but Mom had a little something up her sleeve. In the spirit of fun, I pulled out some secrets from my own childhood days of play. Since we had originally planned to head to the beach, I had the gear set aside; towels, buckets, sunscreen, etc. When we got home and I spotted everything still sitting on the table, I decided to put my own imagination to good use. The result? A blanket fort! Well technically, a towel fort, but who’s judging? I tossed the Skylanders® towels over a small table in our living room and crawled inside. The kids thought I was absolutely bonkers but happily obliged when I told them to grab some pillows and join me.
Once inside, we huddled together with Skylanders® in hand. We made up crazy stories. We told jokes. We pretended that our character figures had come to life. We had our “guards” protect the entry to our “castle” and even kept a watchful eye on our snacks. We even decided that we’d save the last bag of Frito-Lay Doritos chips for Daddy when he got home from work.
It was an incredible morning, an unforgettable day, and family time well spent.
I am so thankful that these two amazing companies were able to help bring our family closer together this summer, even if the weather didn’t want to play nicely.
