How do you get your body healthy and ready for summer?

Oh how time flies – I cannot believe it is almost time for summer vacation! I am looking forward to having the kids home, and going out to do fun family things, but I am also looking forward to something else.

Every year about this time, I start getting into my “summer mode”. What this means is that I am keeping an extra careful eye on my weight {you know, so I’ll look awesome in my shorts and tanks!}, and paying attention to what I eat. Ultimately I just want to be healthy, and if I look better along the way, that is a bonus. Although I have had goals to watch my weight since the beginning of the year, I try to remind myself and make an even bigger effort right before summer.

Here is my plan. I am going to take more walks. Walking is easy and it’s something most of us do every day, so why not just increase our steps a little each day? Every bit helps, and if you include the family on these walks, it not only makes for some excellent family time, but they are staying healthy as well. Another benefit to walking is seeing all the sights – even in your own neighborhood. I always discover something new with each walk I take.

I am going to work out more often. I do exercises at home, and I try to do them regularly, but I know I can be even more diligent if I try even harder. I love the way I feel when I work out – it just does a body good.

My family and I have already begun to do away with the heavy foods, so that won’t be too hard to modify. We have incorporated salads into our diets much more than we used to. We load them up with carrots, hard boiled eggs, and a grilled meat of some type. If we use a low-fat salad dressing, it is the perfect, healthy meal.

I also like to keep some portion-controlled “good for you” frozen lunches and dinners on hand. For me, I sometimes tend to wait until I am really hungry before I eat. I need to work on this, as I have heard that several small meals per day is much better for the body. I have found that when I wait this long, I end up grabbing whatever is handy (regardless of calories, fat, etc.) just to get some food in my body. This is very, very bad and I need to work on this. When I have the healthy frozen meals on hand, I simply have to heat them in the microwave and they are ready in minutes. This is so much better for me, and they taste really good!

  1. I try to be healthy all the time, regardless of the season. I have recently banned chicken nuggets and pizza from my freezer. It’s so easy to resort to something quick after a long day at work! I try to cook up a storm on the weekends and them mix it up with leftovers and lots of fruits and veggies.
