Having kids is one of the most rewarding things that life offers. You laugh, you cry, you grow together, you learn together, and unfortunately, risks sometimes present themselves. After all, kids are essentially like small, drunk, mini-humans, and they don’t really understand the repercussions of picking up that bread knife when they’re only a few years old. Because of this, you need to make your home as kid-friendly as possible, so that the risk of accidents is low. We’ve put down some simple tips here, if you want to make sure that your children are safe at home.

Reorganize the kitchen
OK, first things first. The days of the sharp objects being in the lower kitchen units is over, and you should try to rearrange your kitchen to be as safe as possible. Glass is also a no-go when it comes to filling those lower cupboards, and anything that your kids can pull out and throw around willy-nilly should definitely be hidden away, especially if you have some expensive plates. You can get child locks for most cupboards and drawers, which is all well and good until your genius brainiac little ones work out how to use them. Sigh, sometimes you just have to let things go, and just make sure that the knives are well hidden.

Make your windows and doors secure
We know what you’re thinking. This sounds like you’re locking your kids up in some kind of weird home-prison, but this isn’t what we’re going for here. Kids are natural explorers, and they love to mess with things. How many times have you seen your kids throw a whole bowl of food onto your dining room floor, for no reason whatsoever? You should try and keep your windows and doors as secure as possible, so that your kids can’t wander out into the street, which really isn’t good news. You don’t want to be looking around for personal injury lawyers, when you’ve harmed yourself in the process of rescuing them.

Vet the tech
Technology is worming its way into just about everybody’s home nowadays, and most of us are cool with this. After all, if you need to find out something that’s been bugging you all day, then you can just ask Google, which is probably the biggest godsend of all time. However, the internet can be a bit of a scary place, and it’s not always good for kids. If you want to make your home kid-friendly, you really need to consider how you can filter out certain parts of the internet, perhaps through parental controls or timers on how long your kids can spend on online sites. Too much tech (and the bad stuff) could be dangerous.

So, if you want to make your home kid-friendly, then make sure that you follow these simple tips! You’ll be glad that you did when your kids aren’t playing with knives, trying to run out into the neighborhood (barefoot) and encountering the dark side of the internet! Phew.
