How to Make Your Home More Wheelchair Friendly

disclosure

The word “disability” often carries a negative connotation, but anyone can live comfortably in their home with some extra care and attention. However, for those who have been living with disabilities for a long time, the process of making the house wheelchair accessible is not always an easy one. Whether you are planning to buy your first house or adapting your current residence to suit someone’s disability, there are many considerations that need to be addressed before proceeding. This post will cover six steps that can help make any home more wheelchair-friendly!

Step 1

Make sure the doors are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and have a head clearance of at least 32 inches for wheelchair users. This will make it easier to get in and out of the house while also preventing accidents when entering or exiting through narrow doorways.

Step 2

Take into account any environmental hazards that might be present in your homes, such as stairs which could lead to falls, or uneven surfaces like carpets that can cause tripping hazards. Add non-slip mats at any doorway where there’s carpeting – this will help reduce trips and falls caused by loose carpets or rugs! It also helps if you put these under furniture legs that are easy to knock over when seated in a wheelchair.

Step 3

Install grab bars on both sides of all toilets to prevent falls. These bars should be a minimum of 24 inches long and placed 15-18 inches from the front edge of the toilet seat, but not less than 18 inches width-wise on either side of the toilet bowl.

Step 4

Put safety locks on all cabinets with dangerous items inside so that they won’t accidentally open while someone is in their wheelchair or reaching for something up high. At the same time, make sure to place anything they might need at a height they’ll be able to access easily; whether it be a catheter or medication, or even their toiletries, ensure everything they use on a daily basis is easy to reach.

Step 5

What you should do when you have a ramp going up or down the stairs: always tuck it so that it is flush against the wall on both sides. This will eliminate any tripping hazards for people and wheelchairs alike – just remember this if you are considering installing a new one! It’s also essential to ensure there is enough room at the top of the stairs (at least 12 inches) before installing grips or rails. If possible, try not to place furniture in a way that blocks doorways or pathways – this can cause issues for people in wheelchairs!

Step 6

Adjust your home’s lights, so they’re within reach of someone seated in a wheelchair. This could be as simple as rearranging table lamps, swapping out light bulbs with lower wattages, and adding nightlights to bathrooms and hallways where necessary.

By utilizing the above steps, you’ll have a home that is fit for anyone coming over to visit. This makes it not only more comfortable for you as the host, but for them as well! You want everyone at your home to be at ease and enjoy themselves, and this is the most effective way to do just that!
